Last night was the first time my L5R game did not feel like D&D with samurai.
I took Stu's advice and had them drink tea, oddly enough.
I will fill in more after work

OK< so in my last sessions, which we shall say was still D&D with Samurai, the PCs killed an Oni rampaging through the city. Then they were summoned before the new Imperial Governor who had arrived while they were out of the city. TThey sent the monk, who wasn't there for the fight and was not covered in blood and guts, to stall while they freshened up. The monk and governor discussed the merits of being timely versus looking presentable and the monk also told stories until the rest of the PCs showed up.
After some really formal small talk, the Governor ordered the PCs to go relax. Have some tea. The PCs went to a place called the Quiet grasshopper to enjoy some tea (AND SAKE!!!). While there they heard the rumors that the Oni was summoned by a stable boy. One of the Crab players said "WIth us just sitting here relaxing doesn't it seem like someone wants us out of the way of anything that is going on?" My brain silently replied "Yes, and I know exactly who would do that..."
So they decided to do a relatively unofficial investigation of the boy and what happened. There is much debate as to whether the boy deserves to die or not. (No question about it, the boy will be executed.) In the end they found out the boy stole the book from his mother. He wanted to know why his mother was so distant from the boy and his father. (His father died in the Oni attack). We stopped the session with that revelation.
Now I have to figure out what happens when they confront the mother in the middle of the Unicorn section of town.

I am hoping that your Crab player came down firmly on the "hit him with a tetsubo " side of the argument....

We have two crab. One male and one female. The male crab loves himself a tea ceremony. He does have a tetsubo though.

If you don't have it, I highly recommend the originaly Bearers of Jade sourcebook. A huge amount of Shadowlands information in there, items, even the originaly lost Hiruma school. Not all Shadowlands-tainted people are 'muahahahahaha power! blood!' - true, a lot are - but there are soooo many who are like 'please, anything for one more day of my infant son not dying'...

Ok. So another session in.
The mother was caught. Due to some exploding rolls and my players pulling out every oratory trick they know, the son who summoned the oni will be put into the monestary of one of the pcs provided he can convince the minrstary to do it
It was a fun session that involved catching the mother who follows the practice of maho and some court happenings. At one point you have crab versus crab in court which was - interesting.
Now they have to go from about where the Lion, Unicorn, and Scorpion lands sort of meet up to the dragon lands to place the boy in a monestary there. Aside from Possibly having unicorn hell bent on vengeance try to kill the boy I am unsure what to do here.

So my one player kept referring to the rings as circles which got him picked on by the rest of the group to the point where everyone now says we are playing L5C - Legend of the Five Circles.
So there’s that.
I am considering switching to Masks at this point.

It honestly just feels like your players have no buy in, and no matter what you do they're not going to have it. You've put in the time and the effort man, you've tried, it might be time to cut your losses.

To be fair they went full force on my “bandits are holding the children hostage” situation. They planned it out and got all stealthy except for the one shujenga who accidentally entered a hut with some bandits and needed one of the Crab to save him.
Overall we had fun but damn it it was called L5C throughout.

I also can’t explode my dice to save my life in our game.

Ok. So they are tracking a bandit encampment while taking a 10 year old to live out his life in a monestary.
In the meantime a group of Unicorn Samurai are coming towards them to kill the kid in vengeance and should arrive right after they deal with the bandits.
I just need to stat up some Unicorn Samurai who are enraged and can give a god fight to Samurai who include crab that are magically put on fire.

That should care of those Crab pretty swiftly. A regular ole rank 1 Utaku Mounted Infantry can charge in on horseback using a free action(move up to 25' as a free action cuz the horse has water equivalent of 5), then you attack assuming basic agility of 3 and spears of 3 you're talking 9k4 on attack and damage of 6k4. Plus with the free emphasis you reroll ones. Of course you then have to free action move again before attacking. Go with rank 3 in the school and you can move twice in a round and still attack. The Crab would be chasing you around all day. Plus the Riding Armor gives you +12TN while on horseback. Crab are built around staying in one spot, absorbing hits and hitting really hard. Unicorn are built around moving around... a lot.

I mention this because your crab might just decide to go after the horse (since it’s probably going to be easy to break a leg with his tetsubo, thus putting the unicorn on the ground). I mention this as a warning against gimmicks. Don’t expect to be able to charge multiple times while your crab is unable to retaliate.

Well this is definitely true but that's why you change it up have infantry dude attack crab in round 1 but then moto scimitar dude does it in round 2. Oh and a yomanri archer for good measure.
