Curses, they lied! Status still says "Est. Arrival: 5/1/2012", but it's nearly 9:30pm. Seems like this won't be the weekend for taking it for a spin.
They shall rue the day. Rue.

No time to read this whole thread. I bought a kindle fire and returned it for the samsung galaxy tab 2, which just cam out and is only $250. Trust me, this is the right decision for like 50 reasons.

*shrug* I dunno, so far I'm quite happy with the Fire. Only been about a day, but I've already been web surfing, checking multiple emails, reading gaming PDFs, comic books (.cbz), and novels (.mobi), listening to music, streaming videos (NetFlix and AmazonPrime), IM chatting across a half-dozen protocols, and loading it with photos of various NPCs for last night's game. So far it's pretty much exactly what I was looking for. Naturally ymmv - for example, I have no need of a 3G/4G connection, Wi-Fi only is just fine. I do miss the 'Ticket to Ride' app, but that's not much of a complaint overall.

Wooo! Glad you dig it. What are you using for comic reading? and .mobi files?
Are you going to root it?

Hey guys... i have both a tablet and the barnes and noble nook color. The nook color is very responsive. For small pdf's it works very well. As a litmus for reading pdf's i find the pathfinder rpg book is the best test. The thing is huge so the fact that the nook color does well with it with some minor lag is a testament to it. It also reads mobi and epub files. While i am on the go for work i find the size of the nook is compatible with fitting into a bug out bag where space is an issue. If it is a choice between a good reader and carrying more ammo... the ammo is going to win out.
For when i am at home or not at work i carry an LG G-Slate tablet. Fast, responsive, and it handles pdfs like a ferrari handles a corner. Plus te landscape style screen is pefect for reading pdfs.
If it is a choice between the nook or kindle fire i would go with the nook. It handles pdfs well, has access to things like netflix and other well known apps as well as being able to handle multiple formats and use an sd card. The size makes it perfect to take along most anywhere. If you are looking for something a bit more high end, go with a tablet (Nook also makes one... it is like a more powerful Nook Color).
Regards Walt

Wooo! Glad you dig it. What are you using for comic reading? and .mobi files? Are you going to root it? Me too! Being able to see one "in person" nudged me over. ComiCat ($3) - handled Buffy: Season Eight, all good. ezPDF ($2) - seems to handle my "GURPS: Omnibus" PDF just fine (Characters + Campaigns together), and can persistently crop pages per user-defined size - at this size, every bit matters! The default ebook reader, not sure what it's called - really I just side-loaded a .mobi file to make sure it worked. Don't find myself with a whole lot of time for book-length reading. I don't have anything against rooting but until I come across some app I want but can't get I'm not sure what the gain would be. Did you? Has quite tickled my fancy. I particularly enjoyed being able to quickly call up high-res photos of NPCs while GMing instead of having to print hard copy. Not sure I'll keep the Amazon Prime account past the 30-day freebie - though free 2-day shipping might be worth it, Amazon and I are frequent buds! (Especially since Geek and Sundry's Tabletop has been subliminally forcing me to pick up new games).

mook, nope didn't root it. I dig it fine as is. The rooting tools are pretty simple nowadays but I don't see the need. We already had amazon prime and it's just gravy on top since it totally pays for itself. Yeah, I'm getting Tsuro becuse of TableTop plus I want Small World, though I want to play it first. kroh, yeah I use pathfinder pdfs to test things out with different readers. The new Lite pdfs are really slick. Big speed improvement. Now I use Eclipse Phase and Alpha Omega to test pdf readers since they're big suckers.

For comics, check out ComicRack. There is a free version of it.

I just ordered a Fire myself.
There are just too many game books I want to read that I can't find physical books for -- and printing them out is a pain and pricey.

Yeah my brother in law has a fire and loves it. The only thing he hasn't been able to do without rooting is install google+ for some mobile hangout games!

I haven't yet really figured out a reason to root mine. Any apps that aren't available on the Kindle market are still obtainable from other websites, and I haven't seen any ROMs that really caught my fancy (though, to be fair, I haven't checked in several months.) The biggest complaint that I have now is that it feels like it lags pretty often on the main screen and occasionally in the browser.
I'm trying really hard to replace my laptop with it, but I'm still pretty skeptical about whether or not that will work out.

I went with the Vizio tablet. If you can find one, it has slightly more capabilities than the Kindle Fire, as well as a bigger screen.

I recently went through the same excercise and chose the Nook, only because I was able to install cyanogenmod in about 20 minutes and had a full blow android tablet with no limitations. And now the Nook color is on sale through Target for $150. Can't beat that.
Of Scouse you have to be comfortable about the install(it's easy and free) and it can void your warranty.
So far it does exactly what I need. Pdfs. Are displayed nicely, web and email are responsive, movies and Netflix work great, plus full access to the marketplace.
As you said, ymmv, but whatever the choice, the 7" tablets are a great form factor.

I almost rooted my Kindle Fire, and would have, had I not discovered another way to install Dropbox for Android.
I've also read that Amazon's updates to the Fire will undo rooting it, so I don't want to have something that relies on root access that I can't use once it's updated.

Well, I went ahead and took the plunge. I rooted my Fire last week, with mixed results.
I haven't bothered to install a custom ROM to it yet, but I have been using another launcher (GO launcher). The root process that I used installed the new launcher as well as the normal Play Store, so I can get most apps that I want from there now instead of side loading (which wasn't really that big of a deal in the first place.) I don't really care for the way that Amazon designed their launcher, so I like that I can use this other one, but I'm not convinced that it needed to be rooted to get this other launcher to work.
The biggest downside for me is that when using the new launcher, the native Kindle app is pretty buggy. It will only load the last book that it had open, and it won't launch at all if the process isn't already running.
Long story short: unless you're looking to install a custom ROM or kernel, rooting doesn't seem to add much functionality, from my experience. On the contrary, if you use it to read books, and don't want to use a third party app to do it, it actually makes it harder. Not to mention that apparently rooting it breaks Amazon Video functionality. I don't use that, so it wasn't an issue for me.
