Okay, so it's like a random terrain generator; it might spit out a badass volcano chain, but it's up to you to call it Mount Doom?

Exactly. Two planets might have identical UPC’s and be very different from each other. Eg: a water world could have the domed civilisation on/above the water (like Kamino in Star Wars) or on the sea bed (like SeaQuest DSV): it’s whatever you decide Aaron

Oh hi! yes! hello! I missed this due to many travelling days I'm sorry. I was running a 2E Traveller game up until a little bit ago but it's on indefinite hiatus while I and one of the players kinda move and get settled in again, hehe. Anyway, it's surprisingly easy to convert 1E to 2E and the other way around. The differences are minor enough that even if you accidentally use the 1E version of something instead of the 2E version, it's not totally insane. I definitely recommend doing skills up 2E style over 1E style because the way they kind of used an umbrella skill and then a specialty feels way more realistic (LOL REALISTIC IN A GAME WITH SPACE DUMPSTERS INORITE) than just "you know computers so this electronic lock is a mechanical item so you're completely stumped". I know there are a few crib sheets for people to use their 1E book but use 2E stuff for the most major changes. Like akavidar said, the biggest change is the ship building, and much like the skill system, I kind of really like the ship building in 2E way more. The bottom line is, 2E is more like a major cleanup and update than a real departure from the previous edition. Like, you can have a brain chip with gigabytes of memory now, instead of one with megabytes. That sort of thing. Don't stress! Play whatever version is easiest and cheapest to get your hands on!

Awesome. 2e it is. I've already been planning a setting/sector to get me through the working week!

awesome! If you like to make stuff pretty there are a bunch of really nice star sector maps with space backgrounds and stuff you can use out there. Most of them are for photoshop.

I was planning on using Hexographer just to get a layout. I don't do the Photoshop thing. =P But mainly I've been planning the history and broader politics of the sector. Stealing liberally from Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, Eve Online and other sci-fi I love.

Also, has anyone ever put together a list of official careers not in the core book for MgT 1e? The publisher Spica has lots of 1e careers that are really cool. I tweak whatever I need to when a player rolls something that doesn't work in 2e (skill changes). I am considering house ruling to weaken science 0, since knowing economics means you know astrophysics. Also I kept Zero G as a skill, because it is definitely tricky and has also created some great story moments.

The only books I think you'd have trouble converting are the 1E alien books, and that's mostly because of the skills consolidation between 1e and 2e.
Each alien book has species-specific careers that, of course, rely on the skill list in 1e. They could probably be modified without too much fuss, but because of the skill consolidation, you'd have a lot of duplicate skills, thus higher skill levels (Computer, Comms to Electronics, for example).
The biggest change between 1e and 2e, to me, was the simplification of the initiative rules. 1e used a fluid system where doing certain things (like firing certain weapons) caused your initiative number to change in subsequent turns. I really liked the concept of that initiative system, but sadly, it kind of slows combat down.

if anyone is interested, I've been gradually translating the 1.0 career tables into 2.0 skills etc. It's still a work in progress, but I have an excel file which is most of the way there if anyone wants a copy, just PM me and I'll try to get it to you, though I'm not the most consistent about checking here.

Good point. Megatraveller is a horrible re-write, avoid. I have always liked Megatraveller myself, though to be fair, I have never played it. I have only read it. I got into Traveller right before MT, my first Traveller book was a blue softback of... letter size... So I am mostly curious what made MT so bad? I thought it mostly was the tight left turn the setting took. /Honken

To be honest I can’t recall. I wasn’t running the game at the time. But I remember us was hating it and reverting to the Little Black books

And if you want to put a little Star Wars flavor in your world, please feel free to use this as a resource: Star Wars TravellerIt also has a lot of new or expnaded d66 tables for all sorts of things you can use in any Traveller game, such as Life Events.

THREAD NECRO!
So I might actually be running this Traveller game, and I wondered if there was a system generator for 2e yet? Plenty for 1e but...
