Well - certainly for me, neither Savage Worlds or anything else is very likely to replace my delightful, my lovely, my precious GURPS. (For GMing I mean - at a con, I'll play just about anything if the game itself sounds fun.) Having said that, I've looked over Savage Worlds Deluxe - it seems like a very fun, flexible, easy to play game. I can easily see it becoming the Convention Common tongue. You sir have given me a new mission and I'm fairly sure I can get an ally to help me with this. You must play in a Savage Worlds game. This will happen. I am relentless and I do not give up. Besides if I do you know who will ensure that this happens. Cheers, JiB

Smaller books + fewer rules = less crap you have to carry to your game night, and less things to hunt through for the rule you just KNOW is there. Look, I'm a GURPS guy. Loves me some GURPS. But when I returned to it after several months playing Savage Worlds, I realized that I had been playing SW all along--by ignoring the rules in GURPS that I don't like. And I don't think the 4th ed books are all that gorgeous. I miss the Smif illustrations from 3ed. I guess I'm just cranky. Sorry. I'm sorry I should have clarified it's not that I think the 4th books are the prettiest books ever just that they are better looking than the softcover B&W versions. And then those B&W books look less appealing and cost more than a smaller full color Savage Worlds book.

Who are you!?!? And what have you done with Jeb?
The fact that SJG is going to an all-pdf model for GURPS hurts by dark, Luddite soul. I'm hoping they'll get their POD service thing hammered out, but who knows if they'll really do that.
I'm sure the OGRE Kickstarter was a huge wake up call for the folks at SJG as to where they should be focusing their efforts and resources, and I don't think it bodes well for GURPS in the future.

Of course, that might just depend on the fan base. At the moment, Kickstarter provides an interesting way to poll your fanbase for support of a product or product line, and they'll probably continue to employ such tactics to determine what the fans will respond to. If there are enough GURPS-lovin' Luddites out there, then you might continue to see at least some measure of the products you want in the form that you want them. Hmmm.... maybe you could start a petition... *grins*

Stu I also hope that SJG gets the POD thing figured out. I really like the books and find myself picking up 2nd and 3rd Edition books.

Yeah, the only thing worse than paging thru six sourcebooks looking for the rule you want would be trying to find it in six PDFs. For the record, once I got back into the GURPS groove with my current campaign (Steampunk homebrew world), it moves along as quickly as ever--and the detail that you just don't get with SW is one of my favorite things about GURPS. Don't worry, I'm still the same old Jeb--but now my worldview is a little broader.

Searching through six PDFs is either just as difficult, or easier, depending on circumstances. Most modern OS have the capability to search through the contents of multiple PDFs.
Now, I suspect that your tablets, Nooks, or Kindles don't have that functionality, but you're still at the same point of flipping through pages.
EDIT: Just to add, you might prefer to flip through a real book, rather than a PDF. I sympathize, as I do as well. But truth be told, it's still not more difficult to find something in a PDF.

for "at the table" reference, even at a table full of Ipads, flipping through and trying to find the right phrase of the random rule you're looking for is still much less hassle IMO, especially if you have to zoom and move around the PDF if you have a smaller Kindle or some such

Furthermore, it's REALLY difficult to put all my old GURPS books on my Kindle--and that's where I get most of my material. Electronic or dead tree, it's all preferences. I'm just saying that I have grown to hate it when the action stops and I have to look up rules. I find that happens a lot more with GURPS, because they've written a lot more rules. On the other hand, SW can get a kind of "same old, same old" feeling when the same results keep coming up. Again, preferences. I kind of liked it better when I was young and cocky and GURPS was the best for everything, all around. Ah, naivete.

I actually like to have both. I like physical books for when I'm doing game prep and for just looking things up at home, but at the table I like pdf's for quick reference. Though in all candor part of that might come from playing Hero. The metric ton of books can be painful to carry around.
Cheers,
JiB
