Ailith's backstory:
Ailith Maclir (from mac Lir) was born to a widow, Kate, in Ireland near the end of the war for Irish independence. In fact, it was Ailith’s birth that helped bring about the end of that war. Having seen the death and destruction, including the loss of her husband, Kate wanted only for the war to end and for the Irish people to remain safe. A believer in the old ways and the Fey people, she prayed to Manannan mac Lir from atop a high cliff over looking the choppy sea below. In her prayer she promised her’s and her daughter’s life in exchange for Irish peace at the hands of the Celtic gods. When her prayer ended, rites observed, traditions upheld, Kate threw herself from the cliff, into the sea, infant Ailith clutched to her chest.
Her prayers were answered. The Celtic god of the sea heard her prayer and agreed to her terms, observing Kate’s commitment of Three - herself, Ailith, and Kate’s husband in the war. He allowed The Morrigan to escort Kate to a place of honor in the afterlife, bringing Kate's husband there as well. Manannan then exerted his influence over certain parties to bring the war to an end, and see the Irish gain their independence. The pact made with Kate imparted peace over the country, expressed through the philosophies of pacifism that would keep them removed from the coming of World War II.
But for Ailith, Manannan the eternal foster father adopted her as his own. One more daughter to be raised by him in the Fey. She enjoyed their brief visits to walk among the mortals of Ireland, Scotland and other places that still honored the old ways. After many years though she chafed against her own enthusiastic nature. She argued that she had never been a co-signer in her mother’s pact, and the enforced pacifism didn’t apply to her. Her extended family began teaching her to fight and she took to it like a duck to water.
Fighting filled her up and made her feel whole inside, so when the Nazi agenda became clear she was eager to wade in and battle evil face to face. By 1938 Ailith was 18. Manannan claimed his pact dictated that the Tuatha de Danann could not enter the fray, but Ailith argued that her very existence counted as a loophole. And since the Fey can hardly be called iron-clad when it comes to pact-making, the majority of them agreed to at least look the other way when Ailith went to join the fighting.
Ailith was wounded in the war, but had put a great number of Nazis in their place - face down in the mud. When it was clear the Allies were about to roll in and clean up, she made her exit, retreating to the Fey to heal and rest. Many years went by, as things happen in the Fey, and eventually she found herself wanting to fully understand the mortal life. To remain free of the Irish pact she took herself to Scotland and started her life as a police officer. Soon she became an investigator in Edinburgh, and eventually transferred to Scotland Yard in London. There she made sure to be in the “wrong place, wrong time” scenario that would get her picked up by Interpol’s Grey Notice division, and has been working there since 2015.
