I like using music but admittedly it's mostly for LARP because I can drive to the event listening to the soundtrack. I do the same thing. I have about a 30ish minutes subway commute to our current playspace, and listening to a "soundtrack" on my iPod really helps put me in the proper mindset for the game.

I am reanimating this thread, because I've been introduced to another way to get into the headspace of your character: mood boards! A collage of images and text that visually illustrate something. In this case, a character. My coworker put one together for her PC a few days ago, and I really like them. Some examples: Donna's Mood Board Vivian's Mood Board

Yeah, the picture's rather small. I'm not sure where my coworker found it unfortunately, so I can't point you towards a better quality image. Her character's jacket actually has "but not me" hand stitched at the bottom, cause Vivian can't actually die. That makes it even funnier.

As an FYI, the vast majority of characters that I have to get into the skin of are NPC's.
So that leads us to an Orc Fixer that I was particularly proud of. The trick with him was purely physical. I always imagined him talking while gesturing with a cigar (cause big hands) and tumbler of brown liquor. To help with him, I picked up a cigarillo (cause I don't have that big a hand) and a tumbler to hold while talking as him. Helped me feel and keep consitent with the character while the players interacted. And I felt I stayed in accent more, but that could be debated. Now, I never lit the cigarillo but it never left his hands and kept me aware that I was suppose to be a 6' and change Orc badass.
For my own characters, I tend to have a "activation phrase." A something they say that helps me both wrap my mind around them and helps me get back to their pattern of speech, akin to Pinkman's "Yeah, Bitch" though generally longer.
E.G "Afternoon, I am Doctor Dupont. How can I be of assistance to you, today?" spoken in a soft southern accent (Which is a bit of a lie cause I tend to sound more like Foghorn Leghorn then an actual southern gentlemen) for my Junker Doctor in Deadlands.
