In the heat of the moment, what remained of Asa's instincts for survival, and her bond with Riley, drove her lupine feet pounding pavement to the submarine. The new crew seemed perplexed, but when Riley arrived and assured them the wolf was to be given entry, she leapt into the submarine. She brushed through the corridors of unfamiliar men to the sanctuary of the torpedo tube and closed her eyes.
The next few weeks of travel were a source of constant, crushing anxiety. Riley was amenable, but being trapped underwater in such a limiting space was frustrating. It left her few distractions from her mind constantly tallying a pro and con list of continuing to survive versus greeting the sun. The con list seemed to keep growing.
Her sire was dead.
She had no answers.
No one needed her.
Nothing would ever change.
During the first stop on their journey, Asa briefly considered debarking permanently. But something Riley said stuck in her head. She’d told Asa that Milan was a place to start over. It seemed worth a shot, and the sun would always remain an option if it didn’t work out.
When they arrived in Milan, Asa gave it a try to follow Riley's example. She let herself be styled and coiffed. Her tail was pinned or hidden away under fashions. Her claws remained encased by gloves. Her unique facial structure were explained away as being "exotic". She met new people and attempted to experience what Milan had to offer. But inside there was nothing. Only the companionship of Riley seemed to offer any comfort.
After a few months, she bid Riley farewell and set off. She wandered east toward Bucharest and Romania, sticking mainly to unpopulated areas and dense wilderness. The loneliness was ever present, but at least the surroundings were beautiful.
One night she found herself outside of Sinaia when she heard a familiar howling. Werewolves were nearby and approaching fast. Asa held her ground as they moved in, attempting to look as nonthreatening as possible as they circled around her...
