A Game of Letters

Right now I’m playing a Crane Coutier named Doji Masako in the new L5R beta playtest rules. We are two full sessions in so far. Last session my character’s blackmailer was revealed to be the Scorpion courtier (surprise surprise huh?). Anyways, he knows about a courtly romance that my character was involved with last year. In the poetry contest he read a haiku which meant nothing to the casual observer, but was clear in intention to my character: “I know what you did last winter”.
In the following Go contest I learned I was out of my depth when Masako was paired with him in the first round. Thus I don’t think I have a chance against this guy... at least not traditionally. So what is a crane to do? Well, I intend to make him my friend, and this is my intended opening salvo in the game of letters:
”A gift far to great
Truth witnessed by the unseen
I could not accept”
I intend to send this haiku with a Daffodil (which signifies respect). The note itself will be done in calligraphy on thick paper. I’m not sure what shape I will be folding it into yet, but I do intend to do some kind of origami with the letter itself as well.
For those who don’t know, any gift that is worth receiving must be declined twice before it can be accepted in rokugani culture. Thus my goal is to reframe our relationship by insinuating that his subtle threat was really a gift instead. With any luck, before long I will have myself a rather useful ally instead of a blackmailer. Wish me luck!
