I'm soon going to run a Mutant: Year Zero session for my 8-year old son and his friends.
MY0 is normally a post-apocalyptic setting where mutants fight for survival against antropomorphic animals and robots. It's tragicomic in that sense that animals that walk around on their hindlegs are rather goofy, and the robots are like superpowered children that try to understand concepts like "love" and "free will", but it's still bleak and harsh because people murdering each other all the time over dwindling resources and force their enemies into slavery. It's a dog eat dog world... sometimes literally, with dogs armed with knives and lead pipes.
The game I'm running for the kids is of course more lighthearted and tongue-in-cheek. They are mutant kids out on adventure and the game is more about exploration and discovery that sickness and starvation.
Last session, the PCs got caught by mutated animals and tried to fight their way out. After pushing a lot of people of buildings, both sides settled for a cease fire. The session was coming to a close, and I decided to improvise a cliff hanger. The animals' pack leader (a cybernetic monkey with robot eyes) told the PCs that they would be free to go unharmed... if they endured THE TRIAL OF THE SPIDER!!!!!!
The monkey pointed at a nearby skyscraper and said that they players would be dropped on the top floor, and that they would need to get down to the ground. Problem is that the building houses an humongous spider with a taste for human flesh.
The kids jaws dropped when I described the trial and they have been talking since about THE TRIAL OF THE SPIDER and are really looking forward to it.
But this was just something I pulled out of my ass the last minute, so I haven't really thought it through. So I come here - to the infinite well of Happy Jacks wisdom - to ask if anyone has any cool ideas on how to make THE TRIAL OF THE SPIDER awesome. :-)

Include baby spiders and people to rescue.

Do a dungeon crawl with classic traps, treasure and at the lowest level a boss monster.
The good thing about kids are that they haven't learned all the tropes yet so steal and get inspired by old adventure movies/books/campaigns.
I can look in my old mutant books for monsters if you want me to.
There'sfor example a creature called Hummelkung (bumbleking) that they can find in a spider web.

Since I'm a 'young turk' - as paraphrased by andreasdavour - I haven't read the old mutant books, so please tell me what this classic vintage monster does. :-) Lots of text, rough summary: A peacefull mythical beast mostly concerned with the gathering of honey, unless it is cornered. The rage of a Bumbleking is the explanation of the short lifespan of honey hunters. General food information and some history of the honey production including mentioning of a drink made from it. The Bumble king is hunted and the hunt of it has lead to conflict in many outlaying areas of the land between honey hunters and woodsmen. The Bumbleking lives in underground areas that grows with them and have sometimes been expanded into ancient enclaves from before the apocalypse. A Bubleking is almost inposible to fight in its lair so the most common way of fighting them is to some them out in to the open, even so often not all honey hunters survive. They fight in two major ways, a charge that can break all the bones of a person and by emitting a buzzing sound that creates nausea and can lead to spasms. Size 3 meter /6 feet and spherical with unproportionally small wings, head and legs. Tastes sweet but has flabby textured meat, most most suitable for stewing or as mince.

Since they are being dropped on top of a skyscraper, give them a section were they have find a way to crawl down without getting stuck to a set of webs to get to the next floor, another section could be they need to burn up webs to be able to do, another section could be flooded on one side and they have to find or make a way to swing across to the other side, if the kids are interested in working with NPC's you could also have a section where the easiest way to get across is to get aide from a friendly creature or person.

Presumably none of the PCs can fly and/or won't just elect to leap off the top of the skyscraper using our good ole' friend, gravity?

Huh! That looks like something from M:UA, which is way to new for me. Sounds like a cool monster for you spider challenge, though! The gigantic stag beetle (lucanus cervus), and the land shark are my go-to Mutant monsters. I love those.

We have to run "Uppdrag Mos Mosel" for him some day. For me? Is it an UA adventure? No it is a mutant (1984) adventure that is actually pretty good. But I can absolutely run a mutant:ua adventure for all interested. Mos Mosel is a good starting point that can be used in any version of mutant as long as you change some NPC's depending on when in the timeline you play. Just decide if you want to play via roll20 or as a pbp. Mutant timeline: Mutant: Elysium Mutant: year zero Mutant (1984) Mutant: UA Mutant (new) Mutant R.Y.M.D. Mutant chronicles

A Friend in Need.pdf (98.89 KB) Probably too late to the post, but I have a few block scenarios I used for a DW one-shot about delving into a spider-cult. Hopefully they give you a couple ideas worth stealing. Could just replace the tunnels down to tunnels and rooms in the Skyscraper. also swap the Idol for a sleeping SPider Queen on a Giant spider Cocoon maybe?
