Hello all, first I'd like to thank everyone for helping me with my questions.
Why am I posting today, I have decided to jump ship from the Mutants & Masterminds rules to the Marvel Heroic Roleplaying rules. After giving it some thought and what advice I've gotten here. I finally made the choice. I am wanting a more cinematic game and think it's a much better fit than M&M. But what are some tips that people have for me? I did find the player and watcher cheat sheets for the dice mechanics. What are some other things to look for or watch for in game?
Thank!

I ain’t played MHR but I ran other Cortex Plus games. Thing is the GM needs to roll the dice every time a player rolls the dice, so: A) Buy a LOT of d8s B) Use dice selection as a way to tell a story.
@whodo, you are a more experienced Cortex+ GM than I, got anything else to add?

So heroic is actually the one flavour of Cortex+ I've neither run or played.
From what I know of the game the only but I can comment on is don't be afraid of using the Doom pool, which iirc is the basis for all of the watcher rolls. I've heard there a tenancy for GMs to be constantly saving the dice for later which can limit the impact of early scenes.
Secondly don't be afraid to play to the genre, which is especially important when it comes to character affiliations. Split the party then bring them back together, have scenes end suddenly and fill in the story later etc. I expect it'll take a lot of buy in from the players as it's really not structured like a traditional game.
Don't know if that's any use, hope the game goes well.

Thanks guys! I bought like a lot of 140 or so dice a while ago. Like 12 sets or something. I’m going to give the rules another read as it’s been some time. Didn’t realize the Watcher had to roll every time. But that’s not a bad thing.
I’ll kept that in mind about the Doom Pool. I know it’ll take some getting use too. And affiliations will be some thing I read up more on. We are currently trying out the new FFG Star Wars game. So I’m hoping that the players aren’t too put off by another funky dice system.
You’ve both been very helpful.
Couple questions. Does the GM always roll in the open? Villain datafiles, is it best to hide them?

I generally roll out in the open with Firefly, especially as the GM is often setting the stakes. Given how the plot point economy works I prefer to have players being able to make informed decisions as to when to spend / earn them and knowing their target number is really helpful there..
For villain datafiles I'd be tempted to go with hidden and provide opportunities for the players to discover the details, feels very superhero to have to work out the weaknesses etc of their enemies.

Gotcha thank you.
I like your idea for the data files. I’m not sure if it’s the same in the other cortex games, but how best is it to prep them? Like in MHRP I know I need the Doom Pool for scenes and the like.

Like in MHRP I know I need the Doom Pool for scenes and the like. Realised I didn't get back to you on this. With Firefly I find it's light enough that I can put together characters on the fly so long as I have one or two distinctions I can drop in. Not familiar enough with Marvel to say if that would work but think this site might be useful for it, collects together fan made data files and templates: marvelplotpoints.com/

I very much jumped on the Marvel Heroic Roleplaying when the game first came out. It has been awhile since I played, but this is what I remembered from the times I played.
For a game like Marvel Heroic, It makes things easier to think of things as a panel in a comic book. It will really help you set up fights and what is going on.
As Whodo said, don't be afraid to use the Doom Pool, It is really interesting when you create complications in a scene (like innocent by standards in danger or a spreading fire). Or when the doom pool has some huge dice (d12s) in it to end a scene before the bad guy is defeated.
A big concern I know we had when we played was player balance. Don't be afraid of having a good mix of Immensely powered characters and Characters that are more skillful. There is very interesting balancing that is built in. Characters like Thor may have his god-like powers (bigger dice),but characters like Daredevil or the Punisher typically have bigger dice pool to roll.
On rolling dice, Roll in front of the players. I could be wrong on this (thinking 50/50 at the moment), but I think there are game mechanics for players potentially looking and using any 1's you may roll.
I think the only other thing that I constantly made mistakes on was using dice from other sources (such as peoples injuries or complications on them) in your dice pool. It was easy to forget those things while playing.
Hope things go well and this helped a little bit, I think the Heroic Cortex Plus system is a super interesting game system and a lot of fun!
