Hello Jackers!
We have received a LOT of feedback in recent days about our APs. One thing that we have heard repeatedly from many sources is that people dislike the impact that the Help a Players and chat interaction are having on the APs. I think that at first it was something new and fun, but listeners/later viewers grow tired of the distractions and changes in the games due to extra dice etc. There have been many who have completely stopped watching or listening to our APs because of this.
Starting immediately, we are pulling the Help A Players form the beer shop. You can still buy NPCs and other things, but nothing that will impact the game as it is happening. The producer will still interact with the chat room, but we will not be reading out comments or suggestions from the chat on air anymore.
I know this will be disappointing to some, but we have always been and will continue to primarily be a podcast. The face mics are just there to reach out to new audience. We tried some new things and they didn't work for our long-time community members, so we are switching some stuff back.
Thanks for your continued feedback and support!

To keep it Short I Like the interaction of Helping the Players in a game and I have liked what some of the helps do in certain games now one solution could be a beer vote at the start of a campaign to determine what the helps do and how many could be done on a per game basis. Hopefully there can be more discussion about this in the future.

Hopefully there can be more discussion about this in the future. If there is to be a discussion on this topic I'm afraid my side of it would have to be, "please just stay away from audience interaction during APs!" I have seen/watched a number of different APs from a number of different podcasts/Youtube channels and I have found that in the vast majority of cases, audience interactions were a detriment to the game. There have been some rare exceptions, like Bill's Crazy character in the Savage Rifts game, but that was a rare gem in a mountain of dirt. And I would say that the most damaging, and intrusive, kind of audience interaction is specifically the type that involves audience members being able to affect events in the game through meta-currencies, like "Help A Player." Aside from the uniquely amazing case of Bill's "Crazy," the only type of audience involvement that I think can be beneficial and not disruptive would be if the GM/Players are struggling with a certain rule or game detail and they ask the audience for help. Notice the emphasis on "ask."

You could have beers as a way of naming things but then you might also get Boaty McBoatface...

That's totally cool, the main difference there being that that kind of stuff doesn't have to be done live. Having NPCs and places created or named by listeners can all be done off-air so it doesn't intrude on the live game. My issue is not with audience involvement in all forms, only the interactions that happen during game time itself. As for Boaty McBoatface, imagine how bitter and resentful that dude would be for having such shitty parents who would give him a name like that. That NPC would definitely be someone you do not want to fuck with, he'd have a chip on his shoulder bigger than his head!

I'm pretty sure no one in Rokugan is named Boaty McBoatface. Maybe Boaty-san...
And, knowing what I know about our listeners, I can see a slew of "Boaty McBoatface" NPCs in every game.
Hell, the McBoatface clan of Scotland, might end up being the most populous family in the world -- or in any world.
I'm on to you people! ;-)

So maybe, the McBoatfaces could be the connecting thread of all the worlds of the greater Happy Jacks multiverse! Hey, we could be onto something here! The McBoatfaces will spread their seed among the many worlds of Happy Jacks' APs! Let's make this happen people! As for Rokugan, I propose Boti Makubotifasu-san. It only makes sense that as the mighty clan McBoatface spreads among the many worlds that they would adapt to local languages and dialects.

I think this is in the end a very good choice. Chat room interaction is a nice gimmick for a one shot like bloodsparrow murderous ghosts game. But I found the most recent L5R AP to be generally derailed by the inclusion of the chat. It was also very interesting to see Kimi get frustrated with her own play group when a serious event in game occurred and the goofy 12 year/50 year olds wouldn’t let the gravity of the scene settle without giggling about the taint... I don’t want a game that’s a 3 hour doom and dread laden fest but L5R certainly lends itself to a gravitas that follows the drama of the great samurai movies it at times emulates. Keep the katanas (naginatas) ever fast and deadly! D.T. Pints (Mrs.) Fucking Gordon’s Samurai Fisherman....love that goofy motherfucker.

I've definitely complained about help-a-player dice and chat interruptions, so I like this decision. And yet… I think there is room for both in certain games. I guess it depends on the mood of the game. What is better for the people playing? Does it make it more or less fun, more or less fulfilling?
I worry a little about the audience/fans crushing the joy of the players/performers with expectations. Please do whatever is most enjoyable and satisfying for the players. HJRPG hosts and players are AMAZING! Thank you all so much for sharing.
