Thanks for the suggestions on the sandbox/open world game. Will go back through the episode and take notes.

Also many thanks to Tappy for the term “Inductive World design”. It’s a PERFECT description for my process of starting with a concept or conceit and then spinning details out from there.

"In this Episode: Sean from NJ writes in about sandboxes. Drayle88 sends us a rebuttal about 2-player DnD campaigns. Tadd in Kansas asks about convention game sequels." - SANDBOXES OK, so here's the thing: there are no videogame versions of a sandbox except FROM DUST. In tabletop, I don't think Stu Venable 's observation is fair: putting a plot hook in front of the players makes a game into a non-sandbox. The sandbox examples given "Let's start a bar!" and in jazzisblues frequently referenced "We spent the whole rest of that campaign hunting slavers!" were both originally different games where the players ignored cues and did their own thing. If the players are free to turn it into a game where they can do whatever they like, it's a sandbox game. If the GM continues to use an "enemy clock" and has the bad guy doin' thangs off-camera while the party runs their bar or hunts slavers, it's still a sandbox game. Also, between Microscope, Dresden Accelerated, and FATE CORE's collaborative worldbuilding, even IF there's a plot hook that the GM singles out, it's fair to say that it's the creation of everyone's shared efforts.

I agree with chronovore here. Putting plot hooks in front of players can still be a sandbox game, as there will be stuff happening in the world around them. The players can choose whether or not to bite the hook. If they don't, and the GM moves the plot to where they're going, effectively making them face it, THEN you lose your #sandbox.

I'm gonna amend my earlier statement about videogames: Minecraft was a pure sandbox game before they added Netherworld content. Arguably stuff like Garry's Mod counts as well.
