Hey guys.
Got to do my first little bit of VTT'ing on the GM side of things yesterday. I wrote down notes about what needs to be worked on and what I was forgetting. My first "module" as it were, is a pre-made set up that I've adapted into VTT form. With that being said, I sort of blocked out character sheets from my mind somehow.
I realize it is unrealistic to ask all my players to make character sheets before hand, especially because not all my players have rule books, nor are they always veteran players that are used to creating sheets.
In a remote gaming sort of way, how do you guys handle character sheets? I need something everyone can use with very little hassle, so printing out a PDF just will not work. Also I am sort of trying this "no paper usage" test to see if I can do it all without real paper.
I am not a big user of Google Docs, but I hear about using it on the show. Anyone use Google Docs for this? Got any sample Google Docs sheets? Are Google Docs editable in real time? I'd like to be able to keep track of things on character's sheets without having multiple versions of the sheets floating around between me and the players.

I started a Savage Worlds game on roll20.net this week. My wife made her own character on paper and just kept it in front of her. The two other people told me what they wanted in a character and I made them in a form fill-able pdf and emailed it to them. One of them used a tablet to view it and the other printed it out. Roll20 has a section on the under the character pop ups for bio and Info I was thinking of putting together something i could just copy and paste in there.
Even though we where playing online it seemed like they really wanted that paper sheet in front of them still.

We use google docs for our char sheets. Some players simply print them out before the game to have them on hand. Others just have a google docs tab open and switch back and forth when needed. Or just have duel monitors. I like this, because as the GM I can have a tab with each char sheet and quickly look things up on the fly. Although we play Savage Worlds, and we are using Tabletop forge. I Created macro json files for the players so they load in all their macros at the start of the session, when they get an advancement, I just update the json file. That way outside of parry scores, toughness, and money, they can do everything from inside the app. I'm assuming you can do something similar in Roll20 as well.

For my current online game I'm using Obsidian Portal for the character sheets, a lot of systems have preformatted sheets or you can just code one up yourself. That way players can just have their tab open during the game and can update it with relevant notes, comments etc as they wish. There's also the handy options for players to add private info only they and the GM can see in addition to a GM only section. If you're curious the characters for the game can be found at: www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/cortex-powers/characters The PCs all have full sheets, the NPCs mostly just have minimal notes at present.

I've played (And ran) a fair number of virtual/remote games, and I personally like to have my character sheet somewhere I can access it quickly |(like a google doc or an obsidian portal tab), but at the same time, especially when I'm running the game, I *HATE* tabbing back and forth everywhere more than I have to, so I usually end up printing it out. It's a big waste of paper, sure. But it's convenient for me.

If I was playing in a game I agree with Forresst. I'd just print it out as it is easier. Just like when I run a VTT game, since I run Savage Worlds, I write everyone's name on a sheet of paper and still use poker chips to track wounds, shaken, fatigue and bennies. Sometimes low tech is still the best tech When I'm running a game I usually don't have the PC's char sheets in front of me, as tabbing to another tab is quicker for me, as opposed to thumbing through a stack of char sheets. I do however along with the tracking tokens, throw up important stats on there I might roll like: Notice, Parry, Toughness, hindrances. Basically the hooks I need are in front of me at all times on a single sheet of paper. Although I am trying a new thing: I wrote a quick spreadsheet with all the PC names, all the things to track that I said above, and I'm offering an extra session benny for whomever wants to keep track of it during play. Since it's a shared google doc, I just have it open and it's small enough to be tucked in the corner, but still at a glance I can see whats going on. I'll report back how well it works ( see lazy players! )
