Out of interest how many GM's have had "their own little secret" purely for personal amusement?. For example in High School I stated up Monty Python's Knights Who Say Neh (from the Holy Grail) and linked them the equally silly but mystical 'Roger the Shrubber' - with an equally silly miniquest/sidetrek attached. In every fantasy campaign I have run ever since they have resided in some secret corner of waiting to be discovered by the PC's . . . for no other reason than it makes me smile knowing they're still there after all these years. On a related thought who else is willing to 'break the mood' sometimes with a little random silliness? . . . quests into the dark unknown etc are all very well and good (and I love a dark, doom laden, gritty campaign) but I find that the occasional respite can also be justified without breaking the setting . . .

In the first game of D&D I ever played, the GM had a dwarf NPC named Quartz who was trvelling with us. One night in the inn, we heard strange noises coming from his room. We burst in and caught him...wanking and looking through the peep hole at one of the female PC's. Ever since then, Quartz has made cameos in every game I have run, either randomly stealing from the party, following them around, leaving a "mess" on stuff he stole from them, and even, in a game after he was killed by angry players, he returned as the BBEG and a vampire lord...it was EPIC!

Yeah . . . I like the sounds of Quartz . . . off beat enough (no pun intended) to be funny but still a challenge and 'in game'

we were also 12, so you can tell we were SUPER mature You should have seen the look on the player's faces when Quartz was a CR 12 encounter and a friggin vampire, after being just a minor pain in the ass prior. We were much older by then and everyone laughed for a LONG time after the shock wore off

I base characters off of old PCs from my WEG Star Wars campaign or my old metalhead friends because those personalities are too good not to pass up.

I secretly call every tavern or inn my PCs stay in some stupid pop culture reference, but only tell them so if they ask. Memorably, in my one big D&D4 campaign, the guy asked which bar he was in on his first adventure, so that whole campaign they made sure to ask. It was "The Duck and Dodgers" that tipped them off.

2nd thing i name at leas one tavern in each city the "Dry Gulch In" an hotel where porky pig an Sylvester vere staying in old cartoon (cant find the cartoon reference on youtube)

I play weekly with a group of old college buddies on G+ who have spread themselves around the country. We often take turns GMing for a few months at a time. nWoD is one of our favorite games to come back to, and one of our guys has a character that has been turning up in our nWoD games for a few years now, either as a PC or NPC (depending on whether or not he's GMing). A semi-sane vampire who has a penchant for crazy revenge schemes and sword-canes, his character, Barcus, like any good vampire, just won't die.
I understand that Barcus has recently crossed the boundary to enter the realm of Savage Worlds, though I wasn't there when it happened. The thought of Barcus's only apparently limitation being removed gives me shudders...

Ever since college, every game I run has a character named "Bob," regardless of setting. Bob has been a shopkeeper in Earthdawn, a smuggler in Shadowrun, an ambassador in Star Wars... and several others I forget. It's not the same character every time, just always *someone* named Bob. It's due to one time when I was desperate for a name for a throw-away NPC, and I went with "Bob," and then Bob ended up being a major part of the campaign for quite awhile afterwards. --Pukka Tukka

When we were kids my players were dicks and always trying to catch me off guard. I said "You enter the City", and they retorted back "What's the city called" I looked around quickly and said "Richly" (it was displayed proudly on a large fragrance candle that was on our coffee Table at the time) "And it has a huge Candle 100ft tall and 60ft in diameter that is always burning, day or night". Well that city is in every fantasy game I have ever run. Just to rub it in their faces a little more each time we run across it

Ever since college, every game I run has a character named "Bob," regardless of setting. It was never a "thing", but our group has always relied on Bob to be the name of whoever we didn't feel like naming. Sometimes there would even be several, working together. The pinnacle of this was at work when we were required to have team names for various business units and I was assigned to name our service team. So I picked "Bob," years later we are still Team Bob and everyone is still annoyed that I won't explain why. No one will accept its just "Short for Robert." I don't have a hidden side quest or anything I do, but this does kind of cross into the "GM Trademark" territory I Emailed about. So mine is really the players wonder how, what and when some foul substance will rain or spray all over them.
