Now it begins…
Mei, Welch, Petra
Mei – working at the Rusty Dragon and using her wiles to try to make back some cash – all of her money invested in a shipment of Hello Kitty jewelry from Claire’s in Magnimar that has been stolen by those damn goblins.
Welch the Gnome Gunslinger was drawn into town by the promise of easy cash bagging Goblins from the towns newly renewed Goblin Bounty.
Petra – the “detective” from Magnimar researching what happened to his clients shipment of trade goods that came up missing outside of Sandpoint.
We join our future hero’s around the bar in the Rusty Dragon…
Welch and Petra discussing going into Brinestump looking for the Goblins that got the fireworks – Mei overhears them and offers to join them and help – and maybe find her lost shipment of jewelery.
They join forces
The research the swamp and goblins around town…
Mei goes down to the docks to use her wiles on the fishermen to try to learn about the swamp.
Welch travels to Hannah’s and to the Fatman’s Feedbag in town to gather information.
Petra goes to the Curious Goblin, the North Way and to vist the sage.
They meet back at the Rusty Dragon to compare notes
They learn of a weird Halfling called Proudstump who calls himself the Warden of the Swamp who wrangles snakes like pets and claims to protect the swap. He might be odd – but he might also be a good resource of information on the swamp. He’s out at the end of the New Fish Trail – the first trail off the Coast road.
They learn of old Megus – the reputed Zombie Witch of the Swamp – She’s lived out there for decades off the Witch’s Trail – but she hasn’t been seen in town in quite a while… no one knows why or what she’s been up to.
Petra was also lucky enough to come up with a “map” of the swamp from the gnome up at the North Way – it’s primitive – but it’s better than nothing at all.
They make plans to start out in the morning.
They rise early and head out on the coast road heading to the south – it’s about an hour and a half walk to the edge of the Brinestump.
They find the head of the first trail and come to the ridge of the bluff over the swamp. The bluff rises 40+ feet along the south edge of the swamp and offers a view over the whole of Brinestump. The swamp is unbelievably dense. Although they can see the extent it’s like looking over a sea of green… no details of what’s on the ground can be discerned.
They started down the first “trail” – the “New Fish Trail” as the locals call it – if you could actually call them a trail. The swamp wraps around them and over them. You can’t see more than 20 feet in any direction. It’s dark… damp… smelly… odd noises… sudden rustlings… The cry of some creature in the swamp to the east… it’s like a nightmare. Even though they are on a trail – the going is slow and they can’t move at normal speed going anywhere.
They came across several rope bridges across waterways as they make their way into the swamp. They look like they are about the collapse in on themselves – covered in slippery mosses – wet and treacherous. They are however strong enough for the party to cross.
At one point Petra catches a glimpse of “something” down one of the waterways – something white, humanoid – but it was only a glimpse… was it real? Was it just the dark of this swamp playing tricks on his eyes?
They find as they move deeper into the swamp – that although they had a map… the map was not 100% accurate… close yes… but not totally… “And I spent a gold piece on this”… whines Petra…
After the second bridge they find the body of some past adventurer, or at least part of him… not more than 48 hours old – totally eviscerated as if from long razor like claws… It’s a gruesome scene. The only way to tell that it had been human was by the remains of the clothing. It’s sobering… And the ominous three toed foot prints leading into the swamp to the east… are lost into the brush only a few feet from edge.
After crossing the third bridge they came upon the dilapidated hose of Walthus Proudstump the snake wrangler.
Calling out to him – or whoever – lived in the house – a small – disgustingly dirty Halfling came to the door – appearing very tired/sick
Although he seemed somewhat cordial, he makes no airs that he would rather not have people in his home – it’s not in any shape for company… he’d rather not have any guests – he’s not feeling well – He really didn’t want the group to come in – but finally relented – he started to make the group lunch as it was getting onto noon…
The goblins aren’t far from here – you could be there today if you hurry… the party felt he was hiding something – that something just wasn’t right.
They asked what happened – he said that he had run a giant snake off the property and that it had bit him…
That’s when they saw it… his face… it rippled… did they just see that? Were their eyes playing tricks on them again?
Welch and Petra asked where it happened and used the excuse go outside and talk about what they thought they had seen.
When they came back in – they asked Proudstump, how could someone who was a known snake wrangler get bit by a snake in his own yard…
That’s when he sprung…
Proudstump lunged with unimaginable speed at Petra – and transformed in mid lunge – just glancing off of him.
Mei and Welch – caught by surprise – can only watch as Petra draws his curved blade and slashs across the creature opening a brutal wound..
Welsh – as the shock wears off – draws his pistol and fires at the thing – grazing it…
Mei steps back and starts to play a song to raise the spirits of the others – but before anyone can do more – it breaks through the door and bolts out into the swamp…
They don’t bother chasing it out – and start to search the hose – expecting to find a dead halfing Proudstump somewhere in the house
As they search they hear a weak voice call out from upstairs – “help me!”
Rushing up they find the real Proudstump crawling out of a safe room off of his bed chamber – beaten badly – from his tangling with the thing they ran off downstairs.
He is very grateful for the PC’s having arrived – he would have surly died had they not run off the thing – he gives them a Cloak of Resistance +1 as a reward for saving him and says they are welcome in his house any time they are in the swamp to rest up as they continue to explore.
Each character earns 400 xp for the night.
