Just sat in on my first D&D 4E encounters. Getting to make the trek to Alaska's FLGS (sorry if I grind on about being up here, but really we are twice the size of Texas, its incredibly beautiful, but only three phuckin game stores). Anyway, I was eager to drop into the gaming community at large namely what's the ol' grandad D&D up to these days. I've played 4E with our local group and the realization that the game we were playing was VERY far away from the model that was being presented to this group.
There were five of us, and I was by far at 38 the oldest critter at the table. I remember playing like these kids but I felt like they too wanted to see more RP in this tactical game that Wizards was kinda cramming down our throats. We are playing the drow campaign and even though not one of the group wielded two scimitars some of the cliche Drizzt shit just wouldn't go away. But, their were these great underlying elements of "Paranoia" style gaming that it would have been great to run with. Each house having their own private motivations and missions. But, it just sorta devolved into a lot of Daily! Encounter Power! shouting. They were having fun and I had fun reveling in the nostalgia of being just like those 4 kids but weeks of that would bore the crap outta me. Does WOTC have a chance if this is the model they are pursuing ? Its such an icon D&D but...is there a story being told anymore ? I know that our group has created our own kick ass storylines...that totally have us homebrewing the game and getting on with the fun. But does Encounters do this in anyway ? Maybe because the douchebag DM killed my Drow defender in the first :40 min that I am so negative. But, I love this game and it made me all fuzzy to see this young group getting into it. But couldn't it be better ? I have to stop drinking and posting. Although this Rasputin is PHUCKIN PHENOMENAL!
