Essentially the fable about the reason why you need publicity. 8 days to go. 15% funded. No one has mentioned this little find. I only heard about it through my geek cred. Take a look at this thing and tell me it is not the wetdream of virtual tabletop play. Even I get into it, and it was demonstrated to me along with www.rpgwithme.com/ as referrence. Then tell me again publicity is "free." I wonder, should I even bother to put a link to the Kickstarter..... Since I brought it up, I will. Otherwise I am old enough and fed up enough to say fuck'em for undervaluing a whole industry of employment. www.kickstarter.com/projects/1720821324/inkarnate-rpg-toolset

It looks nice, but this is where VTTs and I start to get into a tussle.
First the subscription. Ouch. The popular ones Fantasy grounds and D20pro I believe are just one time purchases. The d20 pro even lets the GM license have 2 free guest slots. Now they might not be quite as fancy, but they have been play tested.
Second there is the character builder. It's fine to want to play a rules heavy game. Sometimes I would like to play one myself, but if it is necessary to have a computer program maybe you should get someone else in your group to help you with the process. Also I think everyone sitting around and making characters together is better any way. In other instances I thought the recent Savage Worlds Character Builder was neat, but really not necessary I can make one of those rather quickly.
Lastly and most Grognard-y of me is if I want to play a video game there are plenty of choices that look far better than any VTT, I dislike "social media" you will not find me on any facey-spaces or twit-squares. I dislike previous internet rpg attempts to play by post in forums or play by email. But when all the hoopla started about the gaming through G+ I figured I would give it a go.
There are the 2 Free VTT. I have fooled around with Tabletop Forge and played with Roll20. They have problems and limitations, but they are new and are still working out the kinks. They will have extra special "pay for" versions, but there are free versions.
They are fine and give me everything I need. A little icon on a map grid the GM says is me and some enemy icons. What makes the game fun is I can see everyone's faces. I don't need fancy maps, just some friends and bad acting skills.
And I think G+ gaming is great second choice and wonderful alternative to sitting around the table.
At the end of the video when everyone is sitting around the table with laptops and Ipads staring intently at the screens I cringed.
Why turn your storytelling game into a lan party? Why force your self to think in grid terms? This was a huge complaint about 4e. Less thinking out of the box.
In short, how many of these VTTs do we really need. Lots of Rpgs don't even need maps or can't be confined to squares and hexes in 3 dimensional space. I saw this on KS a while back, but I just don't need it.
