Hello Douchebageteers!
I recently picked up the Mongoose Traveller Hardcover source book because I decided I wanted to run a High Tech game. I've diligently read about half the sourcebook and scanned the other half. One of the things many people have told me is that Travellermap.com is an amazing resource.
My issue is that this website is a little too amazing with a good dose of overwhelming sprinkled on top. I figured out how to navigate, select a sector and then view the data on that sector, but I have no idea what that data means. There are codes on each system so I went and found the Sol Subsector and looked at Terra.
It gives some very basic notes on the tech levels saying that Terra has a tech level of F.
So my question is this:
Is Travellermap.com useful for anything besides a visual reference in Mongoose Traveller?
What other Universe resources would be useful for Mongoose Traveller?
Thanks much for your input.

The UPP (universal planetary profile) is the code you see for each system on Travellermap.com.
It's six digits with a dash and one more digit. It is analogous with the codes in Mongoose Traveller.
1st digit tells you planet size (in 1000s km diameter, I think) 2nd is hydrographics (% of surface covered by water) 3rd is atmosphere (there's a chart in the Mongoose book that describes each code. 4th is population (1 = 10s of people, 2 = 100s of people 3=1000s of people, and so on). 5th is government type 6th is law level.
I *think* I got the order correct, but you might check the book).
This code gives you a rough idea what the planet is like, but certainly not a complete picture. It certainly takes a bit of prep with those numbers to sort of figure out what the world's like.
Old traveller was full of hexadecimal codes like that. Characters were described with them, as were starships.

THANK YOU Stu! I didn't see that box but now that I have the word "Profile" I was able to search the PDF and find it. For some reason my eyes glance over those grey boxes like they don't exist. For as many hours as I've spent listening to your dulcet tones, getting advice from you is like getting advice from an friend! Thank you for answering a newb question!
