IIRC The original Dark Sun had a system where you made up 3 characters and could switch them out... It wasn't so much a switch them out as it was expected that your characters were going to die horrible deaths and you needed the extra pre rolled characters to keep the game from coming to a dead stop. You also started at level three and the stats had higher caps for the same reason. Athas was a world designed to kill you and you had to come prepared. Its one reason I loved it so much in the days of 2e and why I ran a two year long campaign in it when the 4e books came out.

Yeah, all I can really do is echo other people's sentiment about Kickstarter. If your product is done and you're just using the KS money to print/produce/distribute it, then I will be much more likely to contribute. If you're going to use the KS money to develop your product, no thanks. I don't mind kicking in $10 to get a game book PDF even if the game isn't already written, but that's about as high as I'll go really. The new Pathfinder: Online thing looks like a nightmare. I won't be contributing to that KS because a) I don't play MMO games, and b) they're using the money to develop the game, which won't be released until "early 2016". Are you kidding me? I'm not going to throw away $35 in the hopes that I get a finished game (which I then have to pay a monthly subscription fee to play) in 4 years time. So much can happen in that 4 years that'd prevent the game from getting made, I might as well flush that money down the toilet.

The Kickstarter rant was great! I agree that your product should be near completion; if that is not feasible then a schedule needs to be described and strictly followed.

I've realized that in many ways Kickstarter is a bass-ackwards form of distributed risk -- and could be a bad bet.
If I'm going to publish a game, I'll go through the following steps:
1. Develop editorial content, 2. Spend money to hire artists for artwork, 3. Spend money to hire layout guy, 4. Spend money to print book.
Each step (after 1) incurs an out-of-pocket expense, but these expenses are (or can be) incremental.
If I pay the artist, and he flakes, I'm not yet out the money for layout and printing.
In the Kickstarter model, all of us who contribute pay UP FRONT for ALL of these costs (hopefully distributed amongst many). If any one step kills the product, we are out the cost of the entire process, not just the one where the flaking occurred.

BASTARDS!!!!!!
OK, get the pitchforks and start yodeling because some of this Kickstarter stuff is crap. Time to show some products or at least have a good customer service reach around program.
And for those Kickstarters who would get bitchy when they don't deliver as promised and then act like a customer is an idiot needs a bit of a message...
....something like this....
All you motherfuckers are gonna pay. You are the ones who are the ball-lickers. We're gonna fuck your mothers while you watch and cry like little, whiny bitches. Once we get to Kickstarterland and find those non-delivering Kickstarter fucks who are not makin' the product on time... we're gonna make them eat our shit, then shit out our shit, and then eat their shit that's made up of our shit that we made 'em eat. Love, Eric from NJ [/b]
oh, NSFW, by the way.
and if you have not seen a certain movie, spoilers.

I hadn't really got to look at how these were coming along until the cast. I've got other KS RPGs and they are done/complete. I don't know if this info helps at all but I thought I'd share it anyways.

It sure is. I don't think people, the project's creators, understand what goes into making a book. It is a process and not a small one. I'm sure there are people thinking, "Oh, 2 months to write it and then I can send it to the printer. Printing time will take 1 week and it's done."

Which is why I keep saying your editorial should already be done (unless you're already an established publisher).
Shane Hensley put his promise date WAY out there. That's experience talking.

I don't think people, the project's creators, understand what goes into making a book. Dude, tell that to my boss. Seriously. The president of my company too. I'll pay you whatever you want. 10 weeks to lay out fifty double page lesson units that are only being written the week before. No time allocated for proofing or to get the other stuff that goes into a book (TOC, boilerplate, resources, etc.) done. No time allocated for mistakes or delays. Or feedback. A one week break after the last week of layout, and then on to book B, then book C, and then book D. Insane.

Yeah, I used to work for a big defense contractor in the editorial department.
Often, I would get a budget card for 1/2 hour for proofreading along with an 85 page document.
Yeah.

Have to say that Shane Hensley (Pinnacle) has been a real class act in everything I've ever seen from them and the Deadlands Noir kickstarter is no exception. They have kept everyone very up to date, and delivered things in a very timely fashion. Been getting things from them all week.
