I have gone back and forth about fudging. In my early days I never fudged then later I did. Ultimately I don’t think there is one right or wrong answer as long as everyone at the table is on the same page… If role-playing is shared story telling then the random mechanic affects the story being told. At this point I when I GM I want an interesting heroic tale, not one where a main character will be thwarted by a random quirk of the dice or a killed without purpose… However, sometimes stories have those quirky events and I’m just as happy playing in those games too.
So in the end I suppose it is the kind of story you are in/want that determines to what degree you stick to the rules.

Like Stu, I want to fudge less often than I do. Why? When I do fudge rolls (whether my own or calling results for someone else), it seems at least one of the following is true: - I called for roll when agreement or fiat were feasible
- I didn't clearly communicate stakes to player, so character suffers negative results
- I'm worried outcome rolled will not be as fun as ones I imagine or I assume player wants
So, when I say I want to fudge less often, I guess I'm really saying I want to improve my gamesmanship by addressing the items above (and fudging less often will be a happy byproduct).

"I called for a roll when agreement or fiat were feasible"
That right there is something I'm always conflicted about.
You've heard the adage: "Players love to roll dice" right?
We could do a whole show on when to roll and when not to roll (or call for and not call for rolls).
DO players love to roll dice?

Screw rolling dice.
Don't get me wrong, on those moments I do, it's exciting, but I don't play a game just to roll dice. I would sooner have fun being someone with different priorities than me and exploring that.

OK, I'm being a little lazy here cause I haven't looked through the 3 pages of comments, but, regarding the show notes:
1. They are awesome. It doesn't ruin the recording, cause you don't have to read them. But it DOES make it MUCH easier to review an older show and see if it's the one you are looking for. I LOVE THE SHOW NOTES.
2. You guys read a letter with 2 hyperlinks (which you didn't read on air), and said you'd add them to the show notes... guess what's missing from the show notes. :-)
Much love, Tomes

You've heard the adage: "Players love to roll dice," right? I have! ... But each time it's struck me as something GMs say to one another without actual validation by players. Mind you, my own experience as a player is limited—I usually run games. Still, I suspect a player can tell when he/she is asked to roll just 'cuz and I imagine I'd be annoyed, in such case. We could do a whole show on when to roll and when not to roll (or call for and not call for rolls). Hey, I'd listen to that show In particular, I'd be interested to hear you respond to 'blog posts like the following: At the moment, I find the perspective compelling, hence the reference to "agreement or fiat" in my earlier reply. Maybe I like it because it's rather contrary to most of my prior gaming experience and thus seems an exciting challenge? What say you? Am I crazy?

"Players love to roll dice" - when I'm a player 'no I don't think so'. My characters tend to erratic in far as they come up elaborate and complicated plans to achieve the end goal - because my characters want to reduce chance to a bare minimum (because in combat I pretty much suck . . . Cause I don't min max to the max motherfucker . . . I'd rather play a fighter with a high Int or Dex rather than a high Str). I like to RP the shit outta that stuff . . . Gather intell scope the target area look for the least guarded entrance and reduce rolls to a minimum (but I've never played a rogue go figure? . . . Maybe because I think Bards and Rangers rule ) Aaron
