Conventions and the troubles with: you arse bastards!!! I'd give my left nut to have a convention to go to. Typical UK everything is in the south and the big one only goes for one day (dragonmeet) - it pains me it really does. I found one convention worth the trip in Amsterdam but the fat beards that run it specifically exclude the benefits of that august location (really having a convention in coffee shop in Amsterdam that seems to be the only coffee shop that isn't a coffee shop if you catch my drift). I'm seethingly jealous of all you lucky Americans . . . Gen Con 'too hot and muggy' pfft Aaron Don't know how far North you are but Conpulsion in Edinburgh is fairly good and lasts the entire weekend. In the windswept hills and mighty moorlands north of the magnificent Manchester . . . though I have old friends (fellow expats) in Edinburgh Cool (plus that's where I've a prebooked party place the day the Iron Lady finally pegs it: isthatcherdeadyet.co.uk ) Aaron

Finally listened to the rest of this week's show. Cards Against Humanity is nothing less than the single most hilarious - and utterly WRONG - game I've ever had the pleasure of playing. Every one of you douchebag hosts (and listeners) should play this game. Especially Tappy and Bruce. Just make sure that there's not the slightest chance that a minor could ever even accidentally overhear the gameplay. This shit ain't right.

Fast and on the Fly FATE.
Spirit of the Century has quick character creation rules pg.28.
In Full Creation you have 10 Aspects and 15 skills.
With the Fast method you come up with a concept, 2 Aspects, and choose your top 3 skills.
Then with On the Fly, Players can add in skills on their sheet when they come up or if they choose not to "train" in that skill they roll at the mediocre level and leave their skill slots blank. You can also add in Aspects and Stunts on the fly as well.
Although I think it would probably be better to do a bit of a hybrid of both, because Full creation is fun so a taste of that would be good and help the GM come up with a more character centric story.
Maybe do the "novel" and 1 guest starring role. Which would be 4 Aspects. And the novels should only be 2 or 3 sentences at most.

Or it would be hard to not go wrong, as the case may be.

*clip* Packing in a lunch is the fastest and if you eat it in the Auction Hall a good way to multi-task. *clip* Actually, last year when I was taking a break outside of the auction hall they were adamant about no food/drinks inside. Wow, well either the policy has changed or were you outside the Auction Store? Sort of a sub area with-in the Auction space. I know they don't allow Food or Drink in the store but I ate many a lunch in the Auction room (while bidding:) in the past.

Sort of a sub area with-in the Auction space. I know they don't allow Food or Drink in the store but I ate many a lunch in the Auction room (while bidding:) in the past. It's always been the policy that you aren't allowed to bring food or drinks into the convention centre itself. Most often, however, it's not enforced. SG might have been more obvious about his food being from outside, so security may have felt the need to take a stance... I'm just guessing wildly there.... My advice would be bring protein bars with you. They're small, discreet, and when you get the good ones, quite filling. I'm partial to www.questproteinbar.com/ High protein, no sugar. Very, very tasty. Tuck a couple of those into your bag and nosh when you feel the need to. They'll tide you over until you can do a real meal. The hotel advice was thoughtful, but not all that applicable. This is a convention that sprawls across downtown Indy. Even the centre itself is several city blocks to a side, so there is no "stay in the hotel that hosts the convention". Your best bet is to research downtown and grab one of the hotels that are off the hamster tubes. That's if you want quick-ish access to the centre. All of the hotels that are more than a half-dozen or so blocks away have some sort of shuttle iirc (I can't vouch for that, as I ALWAYS aim for the hamster tube hotels). Buy your badge ASAP. January 27th. You want it all set up before the housing block opens up. Then camp the reservations site when housing does open to try and get your first picks. Take a day out just to wander the Dealer's Hall. This is your first year. You'll need the time. Just get lost in there. Now, for the most part, availability of product isn't usually an issue. Unless it's that HOT new game. Then you're likely to run into trouble. So, unless you're after THAT game, don't kill yourself trying to get in to buy it. Trust me. Anyone who can afford a booth, will have the capital to be able to truck in plenty of product. Aside from the HOT new games (Last year it was Netrunner and the Iron Kingdoms RPG) there's usually nothing that sells out. If you're after those... Well, may God have mercy on your soul. ^.- Ooo. One exception to the above. Crystal Caste does a commemorative set of dice for each GenCon... You'll want to buy that in the first couple of days. There is a chance that it will sell out by Sunday.

I don't mean to be argumentative but if this is the case I haven't seen it enforced in 8 years. For the past 3 years where I have been demoing our games 10-12 hrs a day we wheel a cooler into the board game hall and have all of our meals there. Before that to save time and money I always brought my own food and drink with. I have walked into the dealer hall carrying soda countless times. The only place where anyone ever said anything to me was the Auction Store. I could not be more obvious about bringing in my own food and have seen people eating pretty much everywhere.

I wasn't eating, I was just taking a sit for a moment. There were two guys at the doors separating people into two groups. Those with bags that would need to be checked, and those without. Repeatedly people would walk up with food and he would say "Sorry no food or drink allowed inside." I'm didn't go in, so I have no idea if it was the auction room or the auction store or whatever. There was a sign outside saying "auction" and the guys were asking people if they were there for the auction.

As I said, I've not seen it enforced either. Based off the facts that I had available at the time, I was guessing as to why it might have been enforced in that one instance. However... It sounds like they weren't disallowing food in the convention centre itself, so much as stopping people with food going into a specific area of the centre.

I've never been to Gencon, but I've been to PAX several times. And the bit of advice I would add--especially for people who are going to the con with at least a few friends--is to leave the con area to eat.
Every year at PAX, I've seen long lines snaking out of the Subway and the Taco del Mar in the convention center, and a mob standing around the Cheesecake Factory across the street. And yet the waterfront, and Pike Place Market, and dozens of eating establishments, are just a few blocks away. Everything from little taco stands, to fancy-ass expensive places, to bucket-and-roll-of-paper-towels seafood, to brewpubs. I don't know that it's cheaper to do it. It's probably not more time-efficient to do it. But it's absolutely a better experience than standing in a line with a bunch of sweaty neckbeards (because hell, you have the rest of the con for doing that), then standing hunched in a corner or sitting on the floor somewhere chowing down on a goddamn Cold Cut Combo. I'm not even being snobby about it--it's not about "oh, you have to eat the local non-chain restaurants because herp derp." It's just about taking an hour out of your long-ass convention day to sit down and have a relaxing meal with your friends.
Now, all that being said, I have no idea what the convention area is like for Gencon; and I'm well aware that Indiana's weather in August is nowhere nearly so great as Seattle's weather in August. Maybe taking fifteen minutes to walk three to five blocks is more of an obstacle back in the blighted Midwest.

There was a sign outside saying "auction" and the guys were asking people if they were there for the auction. Yep that was the 'Store' section of the auction. In that section you can put items and price them by the day as in Thurs 20, Fri 15, Sat 10. Also Items that are not bid on can then be put into the store with a set price. I have found some great deals there also! It is the same room but different door and separated by a barrier. There isn't a whole lot of room in the 'Store' section of the room so they limit the number of people in it and check your bag. Either way I would still say meals in the 'Auction' area proper are well worth the time. Also make sure to take a run through the store. It's a Thrift Store with nothing but games!
