In the last 3 weeks I've Purchased
The L5R 4th Edition Core Book Enemies of Empire the Emerald Empire The Great Clans and The Imperial Histories
I don't plan on getting the Second City Boxed Set as I'm not sure how I feel about playing in a city out in the Colonies right now.
But If I'm lucky enough to survive my wife's wrath over the rapid acquisition of the other 5 Book, should I pick up either the Book of Air or the Book of Earth. Are either of them worth the price tag? ($39.99 Canadian)

Before I respond let me couch it with this statement: I've neither read nor leafed through either of the aforementioned books.
That being said, I would say yes. The reason I say that is for setting reasons. Every book I have ever seen that was published by AEG alone has been densely packed with both fluff and crunch, and the fluff is VERY deep. If you are interested at all in the setting, then get them. If you are only interested in them for the mechanics, I say pass for now as usually more options mechanically in L5R are not always a good thing.

More if the same uneducated endorsement: everything AEG has done, especially in this incarnation, has added a ton to the flavor of the game in my opinion.

I would say yes. I just bought both of them. Air has shown up and from my quick 1st scan through it is the same quality as everything else they produce. There are some nice expanded/explained rules in it. There is a large section on dueling if I remember correctly. While I love the layout and look of these books I think they all could be organized a little better. Thank god they seem to have great indexes...

Now that I've purchased and read both, I'll give an informed recommendation instead of the ignorant one I gave before. Great additions to the L5R library, with a really unique way of basing a sourcebook around thematic elements in the game instead of tying it more closely to mechanics. In fact, moving all the mechanical info to the back of the book makes these some of the nicest reads in the L5R line.

I have also purchased and read both, and I concur.

I just picked up the book of Fire, and love it.
It's got two of the things I've been waiting for since the core book came out.
1. The Rules for counterspell 2. the mechanics for a Taryu-Jiai Duel (shugenja magic duels)
Some other things that are nice (for me) are some love for Mantis bushi alternate paths/techniques, so they can finally have at least one thing dueling related.....even if any clan/school can learn it as it is not restrictive.
I still want an update for The Green Blade Dojo though...

I'm just starting to read the 4e Core Book, and the price of additional books is a little pucker worthy. Any advice on which books I should be picking up and reading next? Specifically, which are most vital? Thanks.

None of them. What I love about 4th ed L5R is that the cord book is do complete. I bought Second City as an indulgence but it's by no means essential. The upcoming Secrets of the Empire is tempting though.

I'd recommend Enemies of the Empire if you're planning on running the game but it's certainly not essential. I'd also second Emerald Empire as a very useful book, it introduces the setting brilliantly and also helps with getting into the non Western mindset of the game.
