I'm in the middle of my first ever LARP and it's been a hoot. I'd like to suggest opening a sub forum for LARPing . . . Please Aaron

Do we have enough LARPers to generate enough threads to make a subforum? (Honest question: I really have no idea.)

No clue, though LARPS are a hoot.
I challenge any GM worth their salt to run a LARP, or at least write a story for a LARP, since it is like writing an adventure but with budgetary constraints.

Tyler is supposed to get off his tall, gork-y ass and organize a Champions LARP for us.
My wife has even agreed to make me a supersuit.
I'm still waiting.
Maybe by September con.

Dear Aaron, Share your LARP story. Love, Eric Lol. I've only just recovered . . . Got back home and straight into regular game the next night (murder hobos vs The Temple of Elemental Evil). The first day was very confusing . . . Long line to register my character and going through all the skills etc. Next off to the markets . . . Fingers in air to be 'out of character' cause I had yet to acquire a weapon. Opted to go left handed (ambidextrous in real life) and discovered the beer tent . I was bard and the other newbie was pirate . . . By about 9pm we had perfected our signature move: wine goblets in off hands swords in primary fencing pose . . . Plus we worked out the best place to stand was behind anyone with shield. We'd then dart out hit out at anyone engaging with the shield bearers and then run back really fast. In game we belong to the Wolves faction (Norse) and the group who invited us are 'The Northern Fangs' - because we come from the North of the UK. Our factions problems were many . . . The main one being an undead elf assassin and minions out to assassinate our faction leader. They could also traverse the wards of the faction camp. Much drinking . . . And more drinking . . . Lost money at the casino (in character). Formed a trio to mug people but the pirate sat in bunch of nettles and gave us away . . . So a guard of Bears (Scots) hauled us back to our faction and handed us over to our guard captain . . . Who called us "naughty boys don't do it again" for the benefit of the Bears handing us over. We denied being muggers of course . . . Once the Bears left I 'theoretically' asked what if we had succeeded? : just a smile in response. Next time we'll be sober and avoid nettles. Finally proved our worth . . . There was a night attack and the pirate and I pointed out that if I was an assassin this would be a diversion. Turned out I was right - guards asked how I knew that and explained that I'm just a sneaky bastard and that's what I'd do. The Australian came in useful as we spotted the assassin on the field in the dark and I explained to my pirate companion that we needed to squat down low and use our peripheral vision in the dark . . . Because of that we saw him dart into the deeper shadows behind camp and directed the heavily armed patrol in that direction. Final night . . . I've borrowed a second short sword so I'm finally effective in combat . . . Having a left hand reach and right hand parry confusing most opponents enough to at least survive. Buy now we have drunk a considerable amount of beer, wine and mead. I've got into the whole Norse thing and do what Bards/Skalds do . . . Taunt the enemy very loudly with numerous insults involving their mothers or the fact that we have taken them the night before 'in the manner of a woman . . . And they were crap'. Led the chant "Come and have a go if you think you're hard enough" and "who ate all the pies? . . . You fat bastard you fat bastard". All up great fun . . . There was a huge mass battle on the last day and we defended a sacred circle from incursion. I do know that the assassin is still loose and still trying to kill the faction leader. Our faction is in trouble with Hel so Valhalla is currently closed to our deceased . . . One of the experienced LARPers in our group said that I and pirate were, in character, "dicks" but it was funny to watch. Honestly, in character, we were really dicks . . . Insulting Drow every time we met them and suggesting things like digging pit traps around sacred sites to capture the visiting Drow and, on finding out the assassin is an elf, constructing a gulag and rounding up all the elves . . . So yeah we were dicks. but it was a hoot Aaron

I've played in a Doctor Who LARP, a Cthulhu LARP, and a boffer LARP. The standard LARPs were far and away better than the boffer shit. Those people can suck my dick.

SirGuido,
All I play in are boffer LARPs, including a Call of Cuthulhu one. Was it one of those boffer LARPs that was mostly combat and little else (like a Darkon - check out the documentary) or did it actually have RP involved?
edit: actually all I regularly play in are boffer LARPs. I've played others and enjoyed them to, just the company I do stuff for LARPs is boffer based combat, so I am there a majority of time by default.

Boffer? "suck my dick" - as my in character motto would reply "challenge accepted sir!!" Aaron Aaron, I have a character with 14 ex-wives that when people asked exactly how many they had he would always ask "Do twins count as one or two?" The Head Writers, who liked sending in ex-wives as comedy relief for the PCs (and the torture of me), decided to send in twins who were joined at the torso... www.xanodria.com/gallery/2012Game5/photo22.shtml

To echo what Eric said, a lot of boffer groups are more combat game than RP. But, the only LARP I play in is a pretty hardcore RP game. We just resolve our differences by swinging foam around.

I've played others and enjoyed them to, just the company I do stuff for LARPs is boffer based combat, so I am there a majority of time by default. There was little to no RP, it was a local Amtgard group who skirted their own combat rules quite judiciously. At one point people started making weapons out of carbon fiber rods(think fishing rods) because they were lighter. Well, they were also quite flexible. So that meant when they struck at you and you blocked with a sword or shield the weapon would whip AROUND said block and still hit you and they counted that as a confirmed strike. In addition to that if you wore any part of your costume that would stick out, if it got struck it counted as if you were being struck in the chest. So I had a group of people who used the flexible carbon fiber to cheat the system, and then a group of people who wouldn't try to hit me, they'd try to hit my scabbard. I reiterate my above statement.

Amtgard is a combat group. There are RP groups that happen to use boffer as their means of combat but are *very* different. If you hear a group has boffer combat it might not be that style at all.
