All I know is that the wizard on our group would mute both of us newbies (for being loud drunk and dicks) and all we could manage was 'fuck you' once the 60 secs had passed UNTIL another player pointed out that if we tapped his unarmoured head he was effectively unconscious for 10mins . . . So a lot of tit for tat around the camp fire Aaron

I had done a lot of LARPing for World of Darkness.
There was a very strong community before the new edition game out. Its still strong but I dropped out as I didnt like the settings much. Wessex and a few other places still do OldWoD though which I hear is good fun but I no longer have the time!
Among the most fun experience we had was running an all Assamite Sabbat Cell pretending to be 4 different clans. The all time fun was the last regional game in London during Gehenna! It was the coolest Live I had ever been with a hundred or so people!
Had even written some plot for the Canterbury group for Mage when the switch first happened.

I attended a WoD LARP many, many years ago playing a Malkavian where I played him not silly at all as a Jedi Knight...this was back when there was still only the 3 original movies so people didn't realize what was going on for a long time.

I didn't especially enjoy my few forays into full-on LARPS. The concept interests me, but the general sort of player drawn to the (almost exclusively WoD) LARPS in our area isn't one I'm fond of hanging out with.
However, I've been in a few games where some LARP-y elements were drawn in, such as dressing as your character would earning extra XP (obviously somewhat limited to modern-day settings or something near) and those were absolutely excellent touches.

There were a lot of Drow at the LARP I went to . . . It sort of bothered me in a way because it was too close to being like 'The Black and White Minstrel Show' - outside of my comfort zone with respect to understanding people wanting to 'black up'. I know it's fantasy etc but I just saw white people 'blacked up' and it sort of grated a little as reflex that I had to try hard to ignore. In the end I just decided my character was dick and didn't like Drow at all and that solved the whole emotional disconnect . . . Aaron

People play drow because of Drizzt.
Or because of how good they are optimisation wise (ok the LA+2 is a hard thing to compensate but Darkvision, +6-2 stats, SR!!! and the various other goodies are pretty decent for many classes/builds).
I dont think it has any racial motivation whatsoever...

Or because of how good they are optimisation wise (ok the LA+2 is a hard thing to compensate but Darkvision, +6-2 stats, SR!!! and the various other goodies are pretty decent for many classes/builds). I dont think it has any racial motivation whatsoever... I know it doesn't but it's just a gut reaction due to 'The Black and White Minstrel Show'. I don't know if the USA ever got it but it was a prime piece of institutionalized racism by the BBC over 30 years ago . . . it will never be seen on TV ever again (that's official) . . . but in it's day it was massively popular in the UK, New Zealand and Australia and it's popularity was/is hugely embarrassing It matters less why someone 'blacks up' it's an instinctive reaction on an emotional level to the act of 'blacking up' itself. One has to push past it because of it and that requires effort. I'm not a loopy lefty liberal apologist (I was a loopy lefty liberal activist - a very different thing ie: 'viva la revolution') but I remember watching it regularly with my grandparents as a child . . . only later becoming aware of the racist subtext. Basically, very little offends me but 'blacking up' is one of those things that does . . . first impressions last unfortunately and when you're 2 bottles of mead under the belly . . . well . . . Add to that having seen that awful documentary 'The Dungeon Masters' with the dysfunctional lady that dresses as a Drow ALL the time. Then you add, as you note, the Drizzt/Munchkin element . . . so you have a gut reaction, a lingering bad impression from a documentary, an innate dislike of Drizzt cloning and a shit ton of alcohol and it's just easier to dislike Drow in character to resolve the emotional disconnect (given that one is already making the very effort to quite literally 'step into being someone else') . Outta character I had no problems with those Drow players at all . . . I know they're not racist (but I do suspect they're kinky in very British sort of way . . . and believe me when the British get their 'freak on' they really get their 'freak on' . . . whatever the British are they are not as 'sexually repressed' as their cross Atlantic stereotype would suggest . . . decadent deviance is a better description with only the Germans trumping them - if anyone has seen 'that joker card' they'll know exactly what I mean*) Aaron * Savage Worlds and that infamous europorn deck, what sort of game would that be? (the deck in question has been around for over 20 years, it can still be bought in it's original form, and several of it's images can only but permanently traumatize those of a less delicate constitution . . . especially 'that joker card')

So did a LARP this past weekend...
At one point, with gloves and safety goggles conveniently added by the story, we got to smash glass jars filled with liquid and body parts.
I mean we literally smashed them, as opposed to just saying we did for safety reasons.
It.Was.Awesome.
