I've been working on a super secret crochet project for quite some time now, except it's not secret from you guys, just the people who will eventually receive it as a baby gift. So I thought, given the amount of parents who want to run games for little kids, you might like the idea.
I have this little pattern for making granny squares for blankets, except they're actually hexagons, not squares. If there's anyone else on this board who likes crochet I'll happily share it. I found it on youtube. Anyway, I've been making a blanket for a little while now, hex by hex, out of white and light grey hexes and I plan to put them together with black edging. Now little kids have a giant battle mat they can sit on and play with their stuffed toys! The bonus is, when kids aren't playing on it, you can just fold it in half and ta-daaaa! Couch blanket! (I am super sneaky)
I also started making little helmets for stuffed toys with a little bit of velcro on the inside. Now their stuffed toys can have equipment! I've so far made a little sword out of grey fabric with yellow on the bottom for the grip, a helmet with horns, a little club/mace thing with plushy spikes, and little capes. I tried my best to make them fairly big so they'll go on any stuffed toy a kid happens to have, and built in a couple of adjustments so they can fit smaller ones too. I am also in the process of making a crown out of some solomon's knot stitching, and I found awesome little plastic gems to sew into it once it's done. My next (and probably last) other interesting thing to make will be little fireballs to stick on the paws for kids who want a magical stuffed rabbit (or bear, or dog, or snake... whatever). And maybe a cool lightning bolt too.
I would work on making little kid-friendly stories to use it with, but I figure little tiny kids can probably do that better themselves. The point is less to make a whole game system out of this than to just basically expose tiny kids to the basic trappings, so that when they get older it's kinda just natural.
Once I do the white, grey and black one, I might try to do one in many shades of green and some blue for a sneaky "town map". I haven't decided yet.
