I've used music from time to time. The real key is to find something that fits, but isn't distracting. I like movie soundtracks for that usually. They're specifically designed to add mood, but not get in the way of the real action. There's a lot of good stuff out there from other sources, too. I particularly like Nox Arcana, but they're not the only game in town.

I believe I drank some many years ago . . . My first attempt at home brewing. . . . It was a case of waste not want not but it was rough As to background music . . . I can't GM without it!!! The choice is varied. Sometimes soundtracks, sometimes meaningful songs sometimes just nostalgic. Surprisingly I find a lot of stuff from the 70's is rather effective . . . From punk to prog rock. Can really recommend an album by Bo Hannson called Lord of the Rings. It's his take on the books and all instrumental Aaron

I personally never use music when GM'ing, and none of the other GMs in my group do either. I assume we're all doing it because it's too distracting, too much work, and/or too limiting (if your session suddenly turns comic, the ominous music you have playing suddenly becomes incongruous).

I have used music from time to time with games, it can be a way to set mood and tone. It can also be distracting. One of the reasons why when I use music I keep it very low in the back ground and I select music that doesn't have lyrics. Ultimately mixed reviews.

Jethro Tull - 'Broadsword & the Beast' (1982). I based an entire campaign story arc off it and used to play it at the start of a session - the players never cottoned that the first song I'd select was relevant to the upcoming session (like the morse code pips in the opening music to 'Morse' spelling out the name of the murderer) Aaron

The only time I successfully used music in a game was when I was running a tavern scene(yeah I know...), but it wasn't a standard tavern scene. The PCs were using it as a place to plan their heist. So I grabbed some Minstrels of Mayhem(Ahem!) music(my previous favorite Ren Faire band), and played a few songs softly in the background to drive home that they were in a tavern with Minstrels singing for entertainment.

One of which is titled 'Jackfrost and the Hooded Crow' which simply begs extrapolation Aaron

I use music all the time! In fact my current campaign The Awakening of the Desert Kingwww.obsidianportal.com/campaign/the-awakening-of-the-desert-king/adventure-logEach Chapter and Act utilizes a song's lyrics or title...though some folks including me hate the Eagles... When you title a Chapter ...This Could Be Heaven Or This Could Be Hell It creates a definite image and evokes a definite sense of spooky ambiguity to my players. I'm a huge fan! Be prepared for some definite musical interludes in those signed up for my Jackercon games. Cygnus X1 anybody?? :-P.
