Not sure I'm supposed to create a thread for the episode instead of waiting for one, but I'll probably I'll forget otherwise. There's a game called Steal Away Jordan that is all about slave life and experience in the South. I don't own it and I've not played it, but I imagine it would be great material for the "black man, white law" course. Even if you don't play it, you can talk about how the author turned experience of slavery into game mechanics (e.g. slave characters have a harder time doing certain things iirc) and how successful the students think the game is regarding that transformation of history into game mechanics and/or what they would have done differently. Takes prior knowledge of course, but I imagine it's got potential to be a brilliant way to recap and have your students transfer that knowledge.

Sounds like old mate needs to realise that GM'ing is supposed to be running a game for the players, not for yourself.
The fact he had a GM PC makes me think he loved his scenario/s so much he just wanted to play it himself.

About the PFS email, I believe hes talking about the Special scenario from last year. There is an encounter where X culists burst into an auction, and attack the players, stealing a Mcguffin. one runs off with it which most of the guards chase. The other cultists are all Casters, and their tactics say to cast some stinking clouds, then use Summon monster spell to summon some Outsiders. The Specials are written for all levels (1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, etc), and I think what may have happened is the GM grabed the stat blocks from the wrong Tier.
It is supposed to be a tough encounter, but if the GM grabbed the wrongs stats, then a TPK is likely.

The GM in the main email reminds me of what I like to call a "Choose your own adventure" GM. He tries to anticipate what they players will choose with a few other options just in case and then when they go so far off the reservation that his entire path of options is destroyed he throws his hands in the air and has to start over from there. He's literally writing a story with multiple options like a choose your own adventure book.
Pathfinder Society:
First off I apologize. I had a long day on Friday and I fell asleep about half hour into the podcast with my headphones on my head. I would have responded to this then if I hadn't been a lightweight, I am thoroughly embarassed. So, Karsten(I'm assuming that's how its spelled since you know... German).. The GM you had was a douche. The con you went to sucked at organization. None of these things have ANYTHING to do with Pathfinder Society at all. While its true that Pathfinder Society is a different animal than a standard game and is organized in such a way that it is IMPERATIVE that there be certain rules like no Evil and no keeping of loot, that does not mean it is in any way inferior to whatever gaming you normally do. It very well may be a style of gaming that you do not enjoy. I will be honest, I don't particularly enjoy it myself. Wait, what was that? I, an admitted staunch advocate of PFS, a local coordinator, and sometimes GM just said I don't enjoy it? Yeah, because I don't really, I'd MUCH rather play in a home game than do that, because I like to be more expressive and free in my gaming than what the confines of PFS allows. But when I'm craving some RP and I have NO OTHER avenue, I will play a PFS game. When I'm trying to get someone into gaming I will point them to a PFS game. Why? Because its a good intro when you are playing with normal people. I used to have a stable of around 15 GMs for PFS, about 5-6 of them were stellar, 8 were good, and 2 were... evil. They saw GMing as a challenge to kill as many PCs as possible. One even enjoyed it when he made a child cry. I talked to these guys as often as I could about curbing their tendencies, one of them realized what I was saying and dialed his GMing way back and no longer talks about his "Kill Count", the other no longer GMs in our area as far as I'm aware.
Tyler is very right, and so is Stu. Pathfinder Society, D&D Encounters, Living Greyhawk, Living Forgotten Realms, etc are all there for a very specific reason. They expose the games of that company to more and more people. Sometimes organizers and GMs forget that and you get games like what you mentioned in your email. When you get people who see that and run games accordingly you have people like myself and evilgingerdm(who used to be the Venture Lieutenant in Dayton OH)who put a ton of effort into trying to assure that everyone has a great time. Hate on Douches all you want, Karsten, and don't play Pathfinder Society anymore if it isn't your bag because you won't have a good time if it isn't. Just like Stu's disclaimer at the beginning of the episodes says though... don't go spouting off at the world if you do not like what one douchebag did in one game. That would be like me coming to your house and getting a bowl of ramen served to me for dinner and then I run around talking about how German food sucks.

The GM in the main email reminds me of what I like to call a "choose your own adventure" GM. CYOA crossed my mind, too. Ah, I have a soft spot for Who Killed Harlowe Thrombey? Assuming inflexibility is, indeed, FalseStartGM's issue, advice offered in the episode is sound. "Setting, not story," is a good guideline. Another tip for GMs looking to loosen up: LEARN TO LOVE RANDOM TABLES.

Regarding the Whore 40,000 email . "Never split the party!" Always felt like bullshit dogma to me anyway. If you've got a quality group of players who play the game not only to be "bestest, badassest" character but who just love to play, splitting the party would be fun. Especially if its a year(s) spanning campaign. Giving a session for a character to focus on their story while the other players play subordinates or even better antagonists could be an amazing way to develop the story. In a game like Dark Heresy there's such a great deal of intrigue, secret cabals, hidden politics and cloak and dagger shit. A pack of wanna-be inquisitors running around in lock step session after session like a traditional dungeon crawling 'party' just feels very clunky and forced. Games like DH, Call of Cthulhu, and other investigation and espionage style RPGs seem to demand at least one or two side bars a session. Individually focused game every now and then helps build that sense of "maybe everybody doesn't know..." Everybody knows that the dice are loaded Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed Everybody knows that the war is over Everybody knows the good guys lost Everybody knows the fight was fixed The poor stay poor, the rich get rich That's how it goes Everybody knows Everybody knows that the boat is leaking Everybody knows that the captain lied Everybody got this broken feeling Like their father or their dog just died -Leonard Cohen

Fun episode, reminded me of my one chance to visit a cave system at Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. Freakin' Huge, and Cool As Hell.
Naturally I saved the gift shop souveneir book, with the map in the back (I want to say it even had a grid overlay!)
