So for those of you who are not aware there is a new Star Wars RPG from Fantasy Flight Games. Here is the link . It has a bit of a high cost of entrance because of the game specific dice but it looks really good. Have any of you gotten it yet and if so is it worth the cost? I think I am going to wait for the PDF because I am a broke ass college student at the moment.

Played the starter adventure and it was pretty fun. The mechanics are pretty simple once you understand what the different dice symbols mean. Your stats are all dice based similar to Savage Worlds, but at the same time the specialty dice and the focus on narrative when you roll them gives it something of a FATE feel. Having only played the sample adventure in the stater set they put out as a demo its hard to say how it will be in the long run, but its an interesting and fun little system for a one shot at the very least.

I think I am going to wait for the PDF because I am a broke ass college student at the moment. There may not ever be a legal pdf. Wotc ran into the same problem when they had the Star Wars license. They way the license worked when FFG got the license it is only for printing Star Wars Games & Game Books and since a PDF is an "electronic" format it comes from a different division "Lucasarts" the video game side of the business. In order to make a PDF of the same book they would have to purchase an additional License. One license to print the book, then another to release the pdf. And it just isn't financial feasible to do that. Now that Lucasarts is done and it's all run by Disney maybe it could change? But I do know that FFG got the License for a certain number of years and they might have to wait for the re-licensing to make that possible because one of the agreements when Lucas sold to Disney was no changes for the current licensees. On to your question I have read the game. I do not like it. It is not "bad", but I find there are other systems that do the same things better. I came away thinking of it as a really complicated way to play FATE. I do love me some Stars Wars and FFG so I thought this was going to steal all my money. At least I still have some money so I can buy Arkham Horror Expansions!

I bought this a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. But, I'm also a big fan of their take on Warhammer Fantasy which also uses symbol dice pools. It takes maybe :20 min to stop being so typically math focused and start quickly assessing the symbol dice pool results. Once that starts I find combat, skill challenges, anything that requires dice rolls happens very quickly and the narrative is greatly enhanced by those resultant pools. I plan on running a game of it for Jackercon 2013.5 "Remember, Remember the 5th of November" (or whatever the first weekend in November is. A cheap way to take the game for a test drive is to download the free adventure and bonus characters here: Star Wars Free Download FFGThen if you have a smart phone they have the dice app here: Star Wars DiceMy next wish list item is the bullet stopper 498 page core rules book..oh and X-Wing...time to go fishing again. Cheers.

I played EotE last Friday using G+ hangouts and a EotE dice app. We played the "Beginner Box" or at least that's what the GM was calling it. It was an absolute blast. The dice were... different but I really enjoyed the fail with advantage and success with threat mechanics that it could generate.
It made for some fantastic storytelling.

Yeah in success/success with complications/fail dice pool continuum it has a similar feel to Dungeon World. But, by taking the numbers out of the equation the effect of results on the narrative feels smoother for some reason. I also enjoy as a GM to be able to 'complicate' a players dice pool because of circumstances. I would like to run one of these games during a Jackercon (not this one) using Fantasy Grounds because developers have created virtual symbol dice for it, as well as complete interactive character sheets and rule systems. November...

Starting a campaign in a few weeks. That dice roller ap is worth its weight in gold.
Er...more than that, being a digital product without physical form...

I may just have to sell some of my MTG cards to get this god damn pretty book. How about the class advancement system? I saw a video talking about being able to take a force sensitive character from this book to a full jedi in the next two. Also any one want to buy a thought seize and vendillion clique?

Yeah, I'm planning on snagging this pretty soon as well. I'm not big on Star Wars in general, but I think the edge of the universe smuggler type setting might make for some fun Firefly-esque stuff.

(...) It has a bit of a high cost of entrance because of the game specific dice but it looks really good. (...) The cost of entrance was even higher for those who payed 30 bucks for the beta and another 30 for the introductory demo boxset... From what i read, going into shamanic trance makes interpreting the hipster icon dice easier. I won't be getting this.

I'm not sure I get the symbol dice hate...for certain Fantasy Flight charges a veritable metric fuck ton for their products...but their beautiful, well written and I am a big fan. Aside from that like 'Fudge Dice' the symbol dice at first might be a WTF to those who love TEH MATHS but give 'em a few minutes and bang zoom you've got one hell of slick narrative encouragement mechanic. Druggeddwarf is going to run a EotE game in Jackercon and I'm running a Warhammer V3 game...both use the symbol dice if you'd like to give 'em a try. The first one is free ...

The symbols on Fudge dice represent numbers (+1, 0, -1). There's not much to figure out there and once you know what the symbols mean it's immediately and intuitively clear what your roll result means.
The often mentioned success/success with complications/fail dice pool continuum is in no way unique to new or hipster games. Levels of success do exactly the same thing, for example in the Vortex system used in Cubicle 7's Doctor Who, Primeval and Rocket Age RPG:
You roll 2D6 + attribute + skill. If the difference between the result and the difficulty is:
9+ Fantastic Yes, and... 4 to 8 Good Yes! 0 to 3 Normal Yes, but... You've succeeded but the GM *may* add some sort of complication or secondary problem. -1 to -3 Failed No, but... It could've been worse. The GM *may* allow you to gain something out of the encounter, but it may not be what you'd expected. -4 to -8 Bad No! -9 or lower Disastrous No, and...
The method is just far less "esoteric" and convoluted, IMHO.

Druggeddwarf is going to run a EotE game in Jackercon and I'm running a Warhammer V3 game...both use the symbol dice if you'd like to give 'em a try. The first one is free ... I can share my 2 cents, not certain how much it will be the norm, but you can see my side of the dice. I know some players love to roll handfuls of dice. I am not one of them. I have apathetic feeling towards a dice pool mechanic because I stop Roleplaying so I can figure out my Yahtzee score. I've played plenty of Dice pool games and have never seen the benefit of continually adding additional randomizers to decide whether or not something happens. I had fun with these games, but it wasn't because of what I got to roll. In Traveller, Fate, or DW it's bit of a bargain to use the Complicated Success. The Player suddenly has to evaluate how important this die roll was. If the Player has a decent GM, then because the player rolled the dice the GM has something in mind that matters if the player fails. So the Player weighs the consequence vs the potential success at a cost. We eliminate this scenario by leaving it up to the dice to decide which is how I felt the EotE mechanic worked. So it's not that I dislike the symbol dice as much as I dislike the rigmarole the send me on so I can effectively do the same thing I could do in any system. As adding a complicated success would be really easy to do for any game. I don't think the game is bad or broken, but I just have all of these other games I like that can do the same thing without the need of symbol dice.
