I've got to vent this, there's a program on about great sci fi films and all sorts of numb nut minor celebrities are raving about how good ET was. I disagree ET WAS, IS AND WILL ALWAYS BE A TURGID PILE OF SELF INDULGENT ARSECRAP - The revoltingly precocious wrinkled alien shit dies then it Fucking alive again with no explanation . . . It's fucking dead, they say it's dead then it reappears fucking alive and no one blinks and eyelid or says WTF, you don't even see it come back to life it's just fucking there alive. The weekend ET came out in Oz was the same weekend Bladerunner was released. Me and my mates said screw waiting in that queue lets see Bladerunner instead - WISEST CHOICE EVER MADE . . . There that's off my chest, I feel better. Aaron

I had a mentor back when I worked for a defense contractor years ago. I mentioned to him that I had never seen ET. A bunch of people said, "oh, you gotta see it. It's awesome," etc.
My mentor, his name was Bill, told me, "you probably shouldn't see it. There should be some small bit of pop culture you haven't experienced. I've never seen The Wizard of Oz," which I think is even more impressive.

I wish I hadn't seen it. Saw it once in the theater. I sat in front of a kid who said "Is ET going to die mom?", 200+ times. (just a guess based on the length of the film)
I choose my seats wisely now and have no compunction about saying shut up to someone near me.

So let me see if I got this straight...Jesus is an alien, Pontius Pilate is an evil scientist that just wants to dissect Jesus to figure out where all the wine is stored. The bicycles can fly because the tires are filled with holy water. M&M's are the body of christ. Phew that clears a lot of shit up for me. Take that Catholic school! [edit]Shit its been so long since I've seen it I forgot the whole Reeses Pieces controversy where M&Ms didn't want to be a part of this movie. [note to our friends abroad] Americans eat a shit ton of candy(causing us to go pear shaped rather quickly) Many of these are rather shitty in taste. Reeses pieces happens to be one of the better ones. We especially love to mix our candy in a bathtub with someone not wearing pants. We are a young country. (and by pants I mean both american pants and british pants ) Cheers. Curt J.

Look pal the point in which an alien has been hanging out with your kids and playing dress-up with your daughter for like a week, and the government is come down, wrapped your house in plastic and men in hazmat suits are walking all over your bigonias, and did I mention when the kid is on the bike with alien in the basket and he AND friends go flying across the moon?
At that point your little alien friend playing possum and then getting back up again really isn't that weird anymore.
It's more like, "Yeah, okay, this too. "

ET totally sucked. I can clearly remember disliking it when I was like 8. (we got the VHS tape for Christmas).
On a vaguely related note: I saw that "The Wizard of Oz" is coming out in IMAX 3D this september. For 1 week only! There is no way I'm going to see it. Unless they have a special 'synced up with Pink Floyd' showing. Then maybe.

...and the most valuable lesson of all, Reese's pieces are awesome. This. I did watch this when I was younger, and even then I was like "Goonies is better". I seem to recall thinking "why isn't there more with the space ship, the space ship looked AWESOME". But that does bring up something: Was ET the catalyst for all the "kids get into trouble" movies of the 80's? Was it the one that popularized it? The Goonies, Explorers, Flight of the Navigator and all those(even the recent Super 8) came out after, so even if ET wasn't all that great, it did inspire some pretty cool movies later. But I was in the age demographic that stuff was targeted toward when I saw them, maybe people over 18 in the 80's hates Goonies and all that too. I remember them all fondly. Then again I loved(and still do) Hook.
