Setting the tone for douchebag power gamers ("You have to ask Steve, he's game master, he's got absolute power...") since the early 80's. Thanks STEVE...Spielberg.
Cheers,
Curt.

I wasn't 18 until the mid-80's . . . I don't believe ET was the great catalyst for a genre of movies . . . except it made Mr S a LOT of money to make a LOT of those sort of films. But it wasn't the first, my recollection of my childhood is dotted with too many movies to remember along the theme of 'kids get into trouble' : really 'The Railway Children' fits that concept . . . Bugsy Malone with the splurge guns . . . I was 'under-aged' when I saw Bladerunner . . . but didn't most cinemas ignore the necessity to be accompanied by an adult if under 15 classification?. Though I did regret badgering mums BF to take me to see Alien when it was released . . . I had nightmares that night . . . ah, the good old days when parents weren't pussy whipped by the great and concerned into being too afraid to scare their kids a little as entertainment. Aaron

That is because Hook is brilliant.
Goonies WAS better, I'll give you that, but I still loved ET. And Bloodsparrow has it right at that point, it's the least strange thing that's happened.

Nah the alien was ugly. The story was dumb and there were much much better movies out at the same time - like Bladerunner!!!! A world of simulated rogue humans on ruined planet where it's always raining with flying cop cars and the first cyberpunk industrial landscape and . . . Well fuck ET Bladerunner has more contributed more contemporary literature and movies than ET ever has . . . How many writers cite ET as a source of inspiration??? Plus Bladerunner has a longer lasting cultural relevance . . . Especially given the future predicted by many. What would we expect today from ET - exactly what we get in contemporary fiction : they're out to get us which owes more to the X Files, Independence Day and Alien than ET. BTW Hook was absolutely brilliant, apart from Speilburgs name I can't see that it owes anything to ET except to generate the capital required to create it. In that repeat that is ET's one redeeming facet - it made a shit ton of money that allowed vastly superior, on all levels, movies to be made. Give me a classic ET toy and I'll show you how to start a BBQ with matches and petrol. I STILL think ET is a steaming pile of dig vomit eaten by the dog who vomited it and then vomited out again and the rest pooped out later. Aaron

Lets be clear here, while I don't hate it with the rage of 1000 burning suns, even at the time we saw it I was kinda "Meh" when it came to E.T. I didnt understand what was so great about it. And this feeling deepened when my parents got me the E.T. Game for my Atari 2600.
Although the visuals near the end of the house wrapped in plastic and the guys in the hazmat suits and the spaceship were rather striking.
I don't mind that the alien was "ugly", in an age where we wonder who's going around mowing all the lawns in The Walking Dead and they all still have good teeth... I think we need more of that kinda thing.
I think the "kids get into trouble" genre was pioneered by The Little Rascals. Although it wouldn't surprise me if there were earlier examples in other media and cultures.
Also, Goonies is one of my all time favorite movies.

Thank you, truly and deeply, Bloodsparrow - you mentioned the Little Rascals . . . I thought it might be too obscure for some to bring it up but obviously it was repeated on TV's across the world and not just on TV stations too far removed from the bright heart of televisiondom to get anything new. Hell we we're watching the likes of Gilligans Island,F Troop, Hogans Heroes and The Goodies on endless repeat on mainstream TV right up to the early 90's Houses wrapped in plastic weren't that freaky - as asbestos was being removed on an almost industrial scale in Oz at the time. there were much much better movies out at the same time - like Bladerunner!!!! You should have stuck with Goonies. Comparing ET to Bladerunner is apples and oranges.... Hell... It's apples and mangos. And, just because there is something better, doesn't mean that something else is bad. You don't like ET. Great. No problem. I respect that.

Yep I don't like it. Especially when it's fawned over by celebrities of limited imagination in a TV Special on UK television about 'The Greatest Sci Fi Film Ever' - celebrities who are lucky they can spell their own names I might add. Second as the OP I reserve the right to refer to Bladerunner as per my original post. The fact was I saw Bladerunner instead of ET as they were released at the same time in Oz and I still feel decades later that I made the better choice - a choice of serendipity as it was made only because we didn't want to line up for hours to see ET. Jesus H Crucible I was simply venting because I was annoyed. Which I said in the OP. To me it's asparagus and I hate asparagus - what I really wanted was to share the hate with like minded haters. A step into the darkside so to speak - to create a light side free zone of pure hate that would scare away the most self assured of Jedi. Because sometimes Khaos is Good. (not a spelling mistake a nod to Nemesis the Warlock: now there was a proper alien . . . ) Aaron

CREDO Any wonder I hated ET when I had Aliens like this since 1980. Nemesis Master of Khaos. Leader of The Cabal. Revolutionary and terrorist. Aaron Attachments:

Nemesis used to eat fire . . . Plus I would direct people to Alan Moore's 'Skizz'. Though released in 1983 it was penned in 1981 before ET. A similar idea but a much better treatment of said idea. Moore was gutted when ET was released as he knew people would say he'd ripped it off when in fact it was completed before hand and was just waiting on Jim Balkie to finish inking it. Smoulder? I just believe in embracing a little good old fashioned pure hate now and again . . . It's therapeutic Aaron

Whoa there Kain. I'm sorry that my post came off a LOT more confrontational than I wanted. I was killing time at work before the next job came in. Got caught under the gun and clicked post rather than closing the window as I would have given a minute or two of reflective self-editing. ^.^
