The first volume is actually a pretty good village-boy-to-hero story, but if I were you I'd stay well clear of the rest. I couldn't get past chapter 3 of the first book. I tried. I just couldn't do it. I know lots of people really dig the series but it just totally left me cold. JiB I enjoyed the series for several books but after a while I needed a scorecard to keep track of everyone, which is where I had to give up.

Wheel of Lame more like it. God those books are awful and, I don't know, it annoyed me he thought his use of the Arthurian myth in post apocalyptic earth was so clever.

The scene you are referring to, IIRC, I do not think it means what you think it means. It was a vision o alternate worlds, alternate Earths so to speak. And Wheel of Lame has to be the saddest sounding dig on the books ever...

Regarding wheel of time: First book was fun, next two books were vaguely interesting. I would say stop reading after book 3, although some of my favorite characters came along in much later books. It gets very convoluted very quickly. I didn't read Past book six. With a couple of exceptions, the world was fun and interesting. At the time, actually the best part of reading those books were the other fans of the series. They were very sociable, fun, and hilarious. There were wheel of time drinking games, and a grip of lightbulb jokes. I think the best thing that we got out of wheel of time was the blurb that Robert Jordan wrote for George R Martin to put on Game of Thrones.

Tbh, I don't know that I could go back to read the first volume either, just because the rest of the series made me actually mad. Specifically chars doing stupid stuff just because Jordan was unable to come up with actual char motivations but still wanted to write another 400 pages. And his portrayal of female characters is a joke. They all continually tuck at their hair and straighten their skirts. Every single one of them.

I have tried getting through the WoT series on two seperate occasions. I tried reading the series in paperback in the early 2000's and could not slog through book three.
About a year ago I got a chance to borrow the audiobooks from a friend. I figured "Well at least I can listen to them while doing other things around the place." Half way through book four I found myself contemplating my nail gun as a method for shutting the guy reading this drivel the hell up.
Needless to say I found other things to listen to - like a second helping of the backlog!
