I am the link, click upon me.Apparently word is out that there will only be one more public playtest packet, which is due out mid-september. Obviously a lot of mixed feelings over on the wotc boards, especially regarding the much hyped (and largely absent) modularity. Still over all a general positive feeling. The last packet, aside from the skill system, was rather positively received.

I said they'd be pushing it for a 2014 release date continuing at the pace they were. I think they've realised that no matter what they do people will bitch (I personally liked the skill system change) and they probably have a fair idea of where they need to go from all the surveys . . . note that many questions on the surveys were very broad and more about what you want D&D to be rather than the packets themselves. I think they are right and have made the right decision. The public play test has done its job and should be closed now to allow refinery if the final product. As to the complaints about the math? Well that really depends on what one expects from the game rather than any inherent flaw . . . For every person who says the math is right there will be one who says its wrong and that kinda shit can go on forever . . . like 'the matters of system' thread. Aaron

This kind of has me worried that they are going to pull a 4th Ed trick and split the core classes not yet featured in the playtest into later books. The impression I got from a couple of ex-employee's interviews in the last few years was that the dev team is a joy to work with. The marketing and executives, on the other hand, like to shit on anything positive and go for the buck rather than for the service to the customer.
The playtest packet presented to us has come a long way in the past year, and I'm actually excited about what I'm seeing(I could give less than a flying fuck about compatibility with older editions). The game they are presenting feels like a evolution of the D20 era into something with some story = mechanics stuff added in. It feels like, from the test packets anyway, that all the 4th Ed style combat stuff is going to be another book to be added later(and that I can skip).
What will turn me away from it forever is trying to get me to buy 3 player books, 3 GM books, and 3 beastiaries just because that's "Core". I buy products because they are interesting, well made, and high quality, not because I feel I am being coerced. The ball is in their court, they have me at least wanting to Player's Guide, DM Guide and Monster Manual, perhaps even day 1. They just have to not screw up.
