Hello all,
Realized a problem in my game last night (Savage Worlds dark fantasy).
I have a player who is a gypsy maker of potions (possesses the arcane skills), when she used her paralysis potion on an arrow tip, pierced my Viking leader who then got a raise on his vigor roll.
According to the rules, the paralysis still takes effect and he didn’t get to attack the entire combat and it completely changed the battle. Problems were recognized from both players and GM, and we discussed making changes to the rule (though I would rather not as that opens up more scrutiny/ mods to rules)
Any advice??
I don’t want to punish her, but it seems totally unbalanced.

From the SW Deluxe Edition p.132 Paralysis Certain creatures and poisons can instantly paralyze a foe, rendering the victim easy prey for the thing's dark designs or ravenous appetite. A target who suffers damage or a Shaken result from such a creature must make a Vigor roll or be paralyzed and incapable of any action - even speech - for 2d6 rounds or longer. Though a look at the poison effects table indicates that even with a success they would still be paralyzed for 2d6 rounds (2d6 minutes on a failure). Ah rules disconnects. I would go with the rules under paralysis instead of the rule in the table, but that's me. There's no need to change the rule because there are two places in the book where it says different things just use the one you want. It does seem to be a disconnect in the rules in my opinion. You could also ask on the SW forums. Clint Black is great about answering such questions very quickly. The other thing I would point out though is that what the pc's can use, you can use as well. You could have poison wielding bad guys or monsters just as easily as they can. It ups the ante in the game over all, but it is reasonable in my opinion. JiB

We did talk about the fact "If you can have it, the bad guys can too".
THANK YOU for pointing out the rules disconnect... that should ix the problem.
Thanks Jib!!

You could also change the effects a little bit since it sounds like she's just dipping the arrow tip in the potion. Is that a full dose? Does the potion do something different when it's administered via arrow? Maybe, it's only partially effective or maybe only paralyzes the area that was hit (e.g., just an arm). These kinds of edge cases are something that I'm still trying to learn to adjudicate better on the spot. I always feel like I end up favoring one side too greatly in the moment.
