Ok well my main campaign is going pretty good and the group gets along really well. Two of us switch off DMing for the main group and a third guy DMs another night that a couple of us also play in.
Problem is all we play is 4e dnd and I'd like to break out from that even if its just for a night or two so I was thinking of running a one shot in something completely different, probably around either thanksgiving or Christmas.
My idea is a bit of a mix between inglorious bastards and the dirty dozen, maybe a hint of hogans heros. I will probably work up a pow camp or dam destruction scenario with pregens hitting the major sort of roles, demolitions sniper assault and a translator/face man, all with different nationalies, American, British, Russian, French, etc.
I also want to have each player trying to collect intel for their country and maybe give each character some hidden objectives, maybe a defect to the germans and betray the rest of the team option, but that's all stuff ill figure out later.
Right now I'm mostly looking system suggestions. Maybe something rules light, or at least easy to learn, fairly lethal, and maybe without the strict grid based combat 4e relies on. Anyone have any good ideas?

GURPS World War II will give you all the realism and deadliness you want, but the buy in may be a bit expensive. Savage Worlds Weird War 2 will give you all the heroics and the setting has lots of pre-gens for Nazis and tanks and stuff. GURPS Lite is an option as you wanted it rules light, and the main GURPS core book can be a little intimidating.

You could also look at savage worlds. Take the Weird War II setting, and pull out the supernatural elements. It has all the equipment, rules and stuff for a WW2 era game, and it's SW so it's quick to master and has a Benny mechanic.

My pick would, like Houndin, be Savage Worlds because it would be super easy for your players to wrap their heads around also it's a very energetic game system. Weird Wars is a great setting with lots of useful fluff for you to use.
Cheers,
