Hey all
Been running a Savage Worlds pulp game which started for my Brother's birthday last year (If you are reading this post Joe STOP!!!...lol). I am going to put a summary of the game so far so be warned and I will not try to be too long winded.
The party all had connections with a professor of archaeology at a fictitious university in Oxnard California. They had been invited to the gala opening of the a natural history museum which the professor was to be the chief curator of. They discovered a hidden message in their invitations that warned of German agents and soon found themselves slugging it out with a group of mobsters that the professor had approached for protection. They went to meet up with the professor at his house and heard a scream as they approached.
In the next episode they found that the professor had apparently fainted and the scream came from his long time house keeper who had found him down. The learned of the legend of Anzini, an evil Mayan God, and how the Germans were after a specific artifact. Upon leaving the professor's house they found another PC (finally got my Brother in law to join the game) and he lead them to wa wealthy benefactor who was set to help them with their adventure with intelligence and resources. Returning to the museum to check on the professors exhibit they found something wrong and discovered German agents inside the museum. As they confronted the Nazi's they party interrupted a ritual to bring the dead back to life (an undead army for the third Reich). The mummies held off the heroes while as the bad guys escaped.
Episode 3 added a one time visit (friend's brother in law) of an FBI agent who brought them up to speed on the Nazi's they had fought. I missed an opportunity here to tie the Nazi to one of the characters and just realized that as I was typing this summary. Anyway, the group with their FBI agent found tracked down a shipment that the professor was keeping hidden from them at the docks. Unfortunately, the Heir Rasmussen and his minions had beat them to the warehouse. After a large fight, the heroes killed Von Russen(didn't see that coming) and recovered a piece of the item in question.
Episode 4 opened with the party following a lead that took them out to sea. When they found nothing there (thank god they talked themselves out of not just hanging out) they came back to town and found the professors house had been ransacked and the professor and his housekeeper were no where to be found. Finding a note, they followed the instructions to meet the infamous Benny the Fish, local mob king pin (who had escaped unharmed from episode 1) at the museum and a gun fight ensued. It ended when Benny brought the professor out at gunpoint. They dropped their guns and then learned that the good professor was the mastermind behind the plot all along. BETRAYAL!!!! The professor used the reclaimed item to complete the Heart of Anzini and resurrected Von Russen. The German's left while the mobsters held the prisoners at gunpoint until one of the PC's smooth talked the guards and gave chase. The boarded a U-boat and headed to south america to fully bring back the evil god Anzini. The rich benefactor had and idea as to where the professor was heading and helped them get there as quickly as possible. They found a hidden entrance under a waterfall (where else would it be) and ...
Last week we played episode 5. The party followed the cave and stairs it lead to before boarding some canoes and making their way to hidden valley of the eagle. Once there, they discovered the displaced chieftain of a hidden Mayan tribe who had originally stolen the heart of Anzini a thousand years ago. The Nazi's had tricked their way into the valley posing as representatives of the Eagle god, and when things had gone bad, had teamed up with the followers of Anzini (pygmies who ride on giant bats). At the dinner that night the tribe and PC's were attacked by wights who had been sent from the temple at the far end of the valley. In the morning they made their way to recover the sacred egg from a high cliff (not as big an obstacle as I first thought...forgot about the rocketeer.)
As they recovered the Egg, the Bat people swooped in and targeted the elder of the eagle tribe who was trying to reconnect his warriors with the golden eagles that live in these cliffs. I had wanted to make this a dramatic task but by now folks were tired as we had started later then expected. I rushed it through the combat and the party left planning their assault on the hidden temple to regain the Heart of Anzini before The professor could resurrect the evil god.
If you are still with me after that, I am looking for some ideas or a twist for the finale of this story arc. The valley is jungle filled with a slow moving river that leads to a lake where the Mayan city is built. The party is on the clock (At midnight the resurrection ceremony will begin). I want to leave them feeling like they have just watched a great adventure but felt like the 5th last episode dragged a bit. Need to ask for some feedback from the party...just my thoughts on that.
So the question I have is what kinda pulp things would you wanna see in this last episode? Is there any tricks you might recommend so this doesn't turn into some kind of out door dungeon crawl? I had imagined the professor possessed by the necklace and savable but should I make the party kill the old man to stop the ceremony? The group likes to role play and role play so throw out you best ideas and lets see what sticks...I have about 3 weeks to prep for the big finale.
Thanks
