Damn you Stu! I was going to do the kami thing in my game(if it ever picks back up), now it will look like I'm stealing your idea!
Oh and for the record, any samurai wearing a katana is publicly stating that they can use said katana so they would be expected to defend themselves in a duel and it would be highly dishonorable to ask for a champion in such a case. So generally shugenja don't carry katana.

There are actually two very well known areas devoid of kami. The Hiruma lands and the Kuni Wastelands both lay on the other side of the Wall. Before the Wall was built, the Horde rolled over both lands and took them. It took generations to regain control of them. The Kuni enacted a ritual to purge both lands of the Taint that had infested them. This ritual purged the lands of all life, and until recently, no kami would enter them. Only recently, Kuni Umabe discovered a ritual that might bring life back to those lands. He was able to revive a space about three feet across, nearly killing himself in the process.
The creepy part of the island is that there are no FRIENDLY kami. Kansen are (iirc) kami, just those that have been corrupted.

Aslyn, that brings up an interesting point.
If a Shugenja were to coax friendly Kami to guard a Kansen infested sword, would the Kami eventually become Kansen?
mwah ha ha.

Just finished up the session, and listening to the ending discussion now. I have to say you guys are really on track and not behind at all. You are just mostly updating your characters in the slower method. When you spend your XP primarily on skills(which it sounds like you guys have) you tend to rank up a little more slowly than when you concentrate the XP primarily in the rings. You only get 1 insight point per rank of a skill whereas you get 10 per rank of a ring. So to take a skill from 1 to 5 it will take you 14 XP but only net you 4 insight but you can spend 12 xp to take an attribute from 2-3 for 10 insight points. Neither is "better" just one is faster than the other. *shrug*

Sounds like things are lining up perfectly for a very special, horror filled Halloween episode of Saga of the Inukai...
"Ghoul News!" "Two Days of the Dead." "Kami of Darkness"

I love this story and thinking about what I would do were I a character involved, and am amused because upon learning of a dojo ores ancestor I very likely would never look into it or why. He was dishonorable and deserves no attention given hence why he was expunged form records. Ok Finished and loving as per usual. Neither is "better" just one is faster than the other. *shrug* What SirGuido says is true, some extol the virtues of having more unkept dice as it represents the higher odds of rolling a 10, plus the skills unique mastery abilities at certain levels. While others say having higher kept dice is better because you are keeping more towards results and it helps rank up faster. My method is admittedly powergamey, I like to concentrate on getting to Rank 2 as fast as possible, but i still don't buy skills that i never use or have no intention of using. 3 Things that help greatly are Etiquette and Courtier both at Rank 3, not only do you get the 3 insight from each individually, but the rank 3 ability for them is a bonus +3 Inisght, so having them both at Rank 3 = 12 xp = 12 Insight. Might not seem like much but it definitely helps. My other Main thing is making sure to save up or buy it at the start but get a Void of at least 3, opens up more raises, gives more void points, and is crucial for many different schools. Anywho, more important things. Having played Shugenja quite a bit, I think you should be careful Stu, they are pretty powerful as it is. And many of the Commune things you are allowing to be done can definitely break the game as many of those requests fall under specific spells, even if not listed. (In theory all spells are a variation of Sense, Commune, and Summon) And if not listed you should encourage Kimmi to create her own spell using the provided mechanics. Having her Friendly Kami be able to go out and report on so much is very potentially game breaking. Or at the very least give it a much higher Target Number to accomplish such things. and now for something much more important to me: DON'T STOP PLAYING I LOVE THESE CHARACTERS AND THEIR STORY! Seriously, I don't know how much you all want to keep playing but I'll be sad when you guys stop. Theres so much I could see happening, most especially i want to see the Wedding Ceremony between Nikoma and Scorpion Lady (Bayushi something?). Ideally it would be fun to have it take place in the Scorpion lands, presenting new fun things for the family to get up to, and showing off more locations. Maybe Nikoma has to fulfill an obligation for her father, or she has a request of them all? (It would also be amusing to force him to take her family name, not uncommon). Then of Course there's the other potential wedding with the Lion clan. And I recall Stu had mentioned Renjiro's desire to host his own winter court, which is adventures galore! I'd also love to see you guys involved in a Mass combat, because I think it's a really fun mass combat system and think you all would enjoy it. Anyway, I doubt I'm the only one that would love to hear the continuing adventures of this family, and encourage all to shout out and express as such. Let's see them grow to Rank 5, and maybe beyond! Or you know....maybe start again with a multi-clan group..... cause Crane suck. Anyway....somethings to think on. thanks!

On the TNs for the Kami's recon actions, at least this session, Kimmi was rocking above a 35 on at least two of those rolls, so unless Stu assigns a "No, you fail" TN to them, she'd have been fine.
Work calls... More later. ^.^

Good show guys.
I enjoy that things will be wrapping up soon.
I would rather it end on a high note than to slowly peter out on a cliffhanger due to usual reasons games can fall apart.

Another great episode! Definitely looking forward to the resolution. I agree with malifer that this series deserves to end on a high note (sad though I will be that it is over).
Hope whatever you guys do next is just as awesome! Happy Jacks Actual Plays are my favorite radio dramas!

Just got to say how much I've living this L5R fix. I'd just started my own campaign (which will eventually become Second City) when my wife got herself a contract in London, meaning I'm on the school run when I should be gaming.
So all I have is "Inukai" and I'll be gutted when it ends. Though I know I'll have Gaijin's Guide to enjoy when it's done.
