Episode 45: Campaign Confessions: Savaged Worlds Part 1Eight years after its release, the always topical Idle Red Hands review new(ish) RPG kid on the block Savage Worlds. Does the game live up to its promise of being “fast, furious, and fun”? Well, one of us found it fast, another found it fun, and someone was furious. Listen to find out who thought what. Yujiro guest hosts. (Hey! That makes four people. Now, you really need to listen to the episode.)

Its pathos rivaled Oedipus Rex. It had more earth-threatening disasters than a Roland Emmerich film. And it lasted three sessions. In this episode, we discuss The Marius Chronicles and its premature demise. We talk about party design, “yes” GMs, “no” GMs, and the dangers of elevator pitching a game.

This two-part episode was recorded after a one-shot and a short three session fantasy campaign that fell apart at the seams. It was this experience that shaped the negative opinion he continues to have about Savage Worlds. Meanwhile, @chrisinkobe (who was the GM for the games) continues to love the system, while Lyal remains neutral.

And that is why Chris (not Wayne) is the best. It's been so long since I listened to the episode I can't remember everything you didn't like about it. I remember the GM had some issues with how he ran it. And I'm going to guess "shaken". I like the simple mechanics, and that armor fucking soaks. I don't thinks its the best system ever, but I continue to find it enjoyable. It's game-y enough for hack'n'slash players and can have a little more depth than those games tend to offer for the thespian players.

Praise Chris all you want. He'll never come back here to see it.
I was pretty neutral about the game. There was a contention that the rules were more open than 4E and, therefore, the game allowed for more creativity. I took issue with that. I suppose that was more a defense of 4E than a knock on Savage Worlds.
I guess Savage Worlds suffers from being average. Other games do what it does better. HEX's style points are better than Savage World's bennies, for example. I'm not a fan of Rifts, but I can see why it has its passionate fans: no one really does what it does these days (probably for a reason).
