Nikoma seems to me to have a good chance of being the higher status in his marriage to Ayaka, and if Rukai is named Renjiro's heir then he would also be higher status than his woman.
And you're both wrong, Lion is the best.

Those warmongers! They don't even have a decent navy!
On the Rukai note, it all depends on when during Renjiro's rule he actually names his heir. It just seems unlikely that he would name his heir early on. Niko a is a bit of a crap shoot as to who is higher status. In the start of their romance, I would have definitely believed she was, considering her father, and she was to be a bride for a wealthy valleys daimyo.
And which family the lions are a part of.

At first glance, I would choose Nikoma. He has interclan connections all over the place. He got the respect of the Mantis, he's probably married to a Scorpion, and pretty much handled the talking and negotiations when it came to speaking to characters with political power. I would want Nikoma to be the successor...
and that's why it can't happen. I've watched a lot of samurai movies, and it never ends how you want it to... it ends how it has to. Its just like Duty and Honor. Many times what a samurai most wants is not what is dictated by duty and honor. That's why all the movies end bittersweet.
By the evidence I've heard during the podcast and written here by Bakomusha, it should go to Roukai. Pretty much end of discussion. Daimyos aren't handed out to the most worthy, the society is not a merit based system. In most ways it is your birth that sets your path, and Roukai's birth means he should be the successor. Unprepared or not, fate has intervened. He has the others as advisers, and if he doesn't make many misteps, then the wisdom might come with time.
History is full of people coming into power when by most accounts they shouldn't have, and then pulled an incredible performance. Teddy Roosevelt was given his vice-presidency largely to shut him and his followers up. It took an assassination to get him the presidency. King George the Vth would've never been king but for a lot of things happening, and his war time performance is considered awe inspiring and repaired much of the ill will toward the British Monarchy from the early part of the century.
I say, not only make Roukai the leader, but come up with 4 or 5 important decisions in a questionnaire so that we can get a look at what kind of leader he was. It is bound to give you a few bits of story to work with in the later games if they happen as well.

The poll is closed, and according to the results, Renjiro would name Nikoma as successor. This would probably involve adopting him.
Prior to all of this happening, Renjiro would make it known without it being known that this was his intention. He would want to give Nikoma the opportunity to refuse, without having to risk dishonoring his Daimyo (assuming their married, Aiyaka would probably help facilitate this).
Nikoma could easily make himself unavailable, by behaving irresponsibly in public or otherwise committing some small act of dishonor that would signal a "no" to Renjiro.
It would then pass to Roukai, and the process would continue.
By the time this all transpires, Ikume and Musashi are probably already dead (read their epilogues) in other threads.

I can see it now. Nikoma takes over....dies a month or two later...now his wife is in charge....scorpion coup complete!

And a wonderfully intricate plan it is! Taking nearly a generation to unfold.

I'm still half convinced the whole Violet Nightfall situation was created through Scorpion manipulation. Initially to control the son of the original daiymo in the valley then when the PCs got involved it was used to make the Scorpion favoured friends of the group. Would be classic Scorpion playing both sides that paid off brilliantly.

Personally, I like the idea of someone besides a PC becoming Daimyo, as I'd rather not play someone's PC as as NPC. Another reason I picked Roukai, very little talking. And when Daiymo Roukai wants to be left alone he gets it.

CRAB CLAN IS BEST CLAN! None of you other clans could handle what we Crab do on daily basses for our land and our Emperor! Without us and our wall the lands would have been consumed by the taint long ago!

I have dedicated myself to better learning the background and rules for L5R going into the next adventure. I realize that it bothered some folks that we were losing some things especially with our spaced out games and needing to refresh ourselves constantly.
I'm thinking that I should have time to get through a book or two over the Thanksgiving week to put myself in the better informed camp!
Now I'm just faced with getting back into playing a samurai that ISN'T Nikoma-san. It will be a fun challenge!

Now I'm just faced with getting back into playing a samurai that ISN'T Nikoma-san. It will be a fun challenge! I'm a rules lawyer type, but all and all I thought you guys and gal did a great job of playing the game. You got through the story without letting the fiddly crunchy bits of the mechanics get in the way. If you're interested in learning more about the game I know a couple of sites that could help to speed up the process. The Last Haiku is a somewhat shady, but handy resource to easily find information on character creation. I mainly just like it because it lists most of the Clan Schools that were added in all but the latest source books. I do enjoy not having to keep flipping through splatbooks to find the info I want. Also there's the L5R Wikia if you're searching for something specific about the background of Rokugan. It's somewhat outdated since the bulk of it is based on older editions of the game, but the Fourth Edition didn't change much lore besides adding a some "What-If?" scenarios.
