So, tomorrow night, I'm gonna try out a simple bennies system for my Traveller game. I think it may add a lot, and I'm hoping it'll get them used to the concept, for other games in the future.
My plan right now is to award them for good RP, thinking outside the box, etc... the usual. And I think I'll make them worth either a +1 to a roll (you have to call it before rolling) or a reroll.
My main question now is, how many to give them to start with? At the beginning of the session. Is 3 too many?
Anyway, I'll let y'all know how it goes.

My buddy does this for our 4e campaign. We get two drama points at the start of each session, we can earn more by doing really cool stuff, or spend them to get pluses to rolls or declare things in our environment to help us. I for instance caused a rope to be hanging off a balcony that I then used to swing from one die of a large bar to the other to tackle a bad guy.
we have tried different numbers but two seems to be a good starting point, at least for my group. Gives you something to play with, but its few enough that you have incentive to think outside the box to earn more.

Bennies in a Traveller forum? It sounds like bennies are becoming a cool way to reward players in any system. I hope your session tonight went well with them.
I think someone should start a thread in General about the bennies that they have used in their system of choice.

Well, had the session last night. They didn't work real well...
I opted for making the bennies provide either a +1 or a reroll, both of which could be declared after the roll, and only one benny spent per roll. On advice of counsel, I started them off with 4.
The main thing was, there was very little cause to give them more. I ended up handing out 3 over the whole night. And they didn't even use all the ones they had. After some harassing by me, some of them started to use more, but...
Well, I think the problems were:
1) We don't roll *that* often in my game. Especially in this session. 2) My players role-play fine, as a base level. But they don't tend to go out of their way, or do any particularly impressive role-playing. 3) Some of my players frequently chose not to use the benny on a roll because, although they were annoyed with a result, they thought it was "appropriate."
I dunno. I'll keep trying. Though next session, I think I'm starting them with less.

If dice rolling isn't happening that often, what if the bennie was something more like a fate point?

If dice rolling isn't happening that often, what if the bennie was something more like a fate point? Hm... that's possible. And probably a good idea, since I'm trying to basically get them ready for when I run Dresden Files. BTW, solicited feedback from all the players yesterday, and the unanimous opinion was that they liked them, but felt they probably started off with too many.

Over the past number of years I've lurked around on forums and have played in a 3.5 game where the GM did the tacked-on fate point / drama point / bennies. So far this method appears to be hit or miss and depends on the group. Cool that your group is open to it, congrats. I'd just go full Dresden or Savage and be done with it but that's just me.

Well ,the next campaign will definitely be Dresden Files. But right now we're playing Traveller, and I'm not gonna scrap it just to use bennies.

I think for traveller, somthing more akin to Paizo's Plot Twist cards might work better. They let the pcs change the scene in a variety of ways. IE a sumggler PC might play A Road Less Traveled card to avoid the outer ring of customs patrols. paizo.com/products/btpy8b8m?GameMastery-Plot-Twist-Cards
