Hey,
I've been looking at L5R for a while and I am thinking of buying the core book. Whenever I invest in a game, I like to read some inspirational material to help me get into the setting. As L5R is a Japanese themed game, I would like to read some books that follow this theme. My only experience with Ancient and Medieval Japan is Usagi Yojimbo and Lone Wolf and Cub comics. Are there any novels out there that capture the feel of old Japan? Thanks.

They also did a novel series of their own. The first, following the Scorpion clan, is quite good. The rest are pretty middling, but it stands alone well.

There was a also follow-up series called the Four Winds saga, which varied wildly in quality.
The core book has a list of inspirations at the back, but you can't really go wrong with Kurosawa, Stan Sakai or Kazuo Koike.

Stay away from the Four Winds books. Only one of them is worth reading... And I forget which it was. The Kuronada one was horrendous. I mean worse than bad fanfic.... Actually painful to read the opening...

Yeah, the Kaneka story (Wind of War?) was dreadful. The Steel Throne was good; the Naseru story was my favourite though.

I've been reading the Clan War series and each successive book is harder to get into, but they do seem to pick up once you start to see the characters. What I like most about it is the temporal overlap between the books. There are quite often the same scenes depicted from different clan perspectives that really show the differences between them.

The series definitely suffers from peaking in book one, but it's worth a read.

I also recommend www.kazenoshiro.com/ Its a repository for all the fiction ever written by AEG themselves.

I considered a TMNT/L5R mash-up off the back of reading Usagi Yojimbo! Maybe for a con.

I'd also suggest '13 Assassins' for a samurai clan machinations and lifestyle feel. All my players seem to agree and it has helped them immensely.
