I have been using wordpress for my blog. Essentially I paid for the domain name through them and use their web based interface to post.
I would like to option to do more. I do not really know what options are out there. I want to have a site setup, looking good and be able to post. I want to be able to grow with the site.
I have done some research on blogging software. I even looked to see if someone else could set it up for me. Website design is something that I have neglected in my so called tech life. I worked at Apple for 7 years doing tech support, repairs and the like. I only own Apple stuff so my searches have taken me to OS X apps.
I know that this is a vague request but if you wanted to take your blog away from the wordpress server, how would you do that? I trust the information from this community, which is why I posted this here. Thanks for any help.

I had my blog, using wordpress, on my own web host. When I set it up again, I'll be doing the same thing. As far as design goes, integrating a blog into a website, that's beyond my knowledge.

I use wordpress for all my blogs. They are all installed on a web host (I use 1and1, not wordpress.com).
You would need to back up your wordpress installation and the mysql database it is associated with. I've never done this, but I'm sure it's possible.
Wordpress, Squarespace, Blogger, etc all offer the ability to "import" a web page from another site, so that might be the easiest way.

Thanks Fray and Stu. I sent an email to 1and1 asking them what they offer. I know wordpress works on a Mac. I will probably use that, then learn a bit more.

I started with 1and1, and then talked to too many people who've been kind of screwed over by them, so I switched over to Hostgator, and have been very pleased with them. Like the others, though, I use WordPress for my actual site. I don't do a lot with it, but I've been told by my friend who actually designs this stuff for a living that it is incredibly robust. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to overcome my lazy... --Pukka Tukka

I use WordPress for my site. I haven't done much with it in a while what with moving and all, but I plan to have more up there after OrcCon.
