Yay nother podcast fir on way t' werk (that's Yarkshire t' youse) Talking tips Stu Venable : what's your take on mic's - dynamic v condenser. Cause I have access to a handful of dynamic mic's courtesy of fellow players, one powered mini condenser I normally use to mic up my flute . . . Plus a peyve 6 track mini board (USB enabled) for personal use . . . My mixing experience is old school: patch bays and separate effects units mixing down onto reel to reel so lurching out of the dark ages into PC integration/streaming is a bit of a paradigm shift on the old noggin. Aaron Depends on your recording situation. If you're in a quiet environment, in a room with little echo/reflections, I'd try the condenser first. Otherwise use a dynamic, since most are cardioid (that's the pick up pattern) they will reject more outside noise. I'm not familiar with that board. What are you going to use it for? Recording actual plays? Just yourself? Most mixing (after recording) is done in-the-box now -- as in you don't use an external mixer to mix -- unless you're recording a multi track performance live.

Wow. And this is another fine example of why Happy Jacks has such rabidly loyal fans. Because the guy that started it all is just so damn nice! That would be great Stu Venable. It would also be nice to get together online at some point and talk podcast tips...this could again be something that could be a hangout on air if you want as I think many in the community are interested in either creating their own actual plays or some sort of podium for their pontifications. Thanks again Stu! You've really created something wonderful here. I just send you an invite for an editor-level account for angryfolk.com/argumentphase If editor-level doesn't give you all the functionality you need, I'll bump it to admin. Please use a long, complicated password with special characters, numbers and upper and lowercase letters. I have learned from experience that hackers getting in through any installation on my server can get to pretty much everything. After the con, we can organize a time for a G+ HOA to talk podcasting and I'll help you set it up.

A couple things for the to-do list:
Artwork iTunes won't put your show in the "new and notable" or "featured" section unless you have nice-looking artwork. If you look in those two areas, you can see that their definition of nice-looking can be interesting.
Artwork must be 1400px X 1400px and be either a jpg or png. I would suggest that you keep the source file for your art (photoshop/gimp/etc file), because Apple has changed the artwork spec a couple times, as if they come out with 4k display iPads or something, they'll up the resolution requirements yet again.
mp3 files
There are a couple things to know about mp3s. We'll have to talk about media hosting, depending on the length of your show, I might be able to host it (I'd set up a special ftp account to get into your subdirectory to upload the file -- you'll need to get an ftp client (filezilla, cyberduck, etc) to upload it.
I would suggest you create a MONO audio file and crunch it down to a 64-kbps mp3). After seasons of shows, all those mp3s add up. The first several season of Happy Jacks are 128kbps stereo files -- I should not have done this. It takes up server space, and it takes up a lot of space on peoples' iPods.
Once we have a couple episodes up (I would put two or three up) then I can walk you through podcast best practices.

We were looking at doing AP's. That changes things. When you're recording a conversation around a table, I would suggest one or two (try it with just 1 first) omnidirectional condensers. Make sure the board has phantom power (there'll be a switch somewhere that says Phantom, Ph, +48V, etc). Condenser microphones need an external power source, and that's normally provided by the preamp or the board. Check the lapel mic -- it might be an omni. Hang the mic from above is possible -- don't rest it on the table.
