I'm rather new to Pathfinder, and I missed the 3rd Ed era of D&D (THAC0 for life), so I'm a little baffled at how the Prestige classes work. More to the point, how you -become- one and what happens to the levels you put into your base class beforehand.
As I understand it, you have to be level 5 before you can consider a Prestige class, but I have several questions I'm not finding answers to. I'll try to ask them as concisely as possible:
-After you choose to take a level in a prestige class, do you lose the HP and benefits of the class you already had? Like, if a 5th level Rogue decides to become a Duelist, does he lose the HP and skills he's built up so far?
-When you decide to move to a prestige class, can you continue to put levels into your base class, or do you lose that option?
And here's the one I'm really having trouble with:
-I can't find XP charts for leveling up anywhere. I'm assuming that every class has an XP requirement to transition from 1st to 2nd to 3rd level and so on, but I don't see them in the book anywhere. I'm assuming Prestige classes have their own XP charts for leveling up, but I can't find them either.
Thanks in advance for the help.

The XP chart is on page 30 of the Core Rulebook, right next to it are the details of multiclassing.
As for Prestige classes, you don't lose anything that you have already gained, you add additional skills/hp/feats/etc. Depending on the classes, you may end up losing a caster level when you choose your first level of the prestige class. You can put additional levels into either class when you level up. A 5th level rogue taking a level in Duelist would be a 5 Rogue/1 Duelist, a 6th level character.
Hope that helps!

It does. Very much so! Thank you for the response, and thanks double for making it easy to understand for a dummy like myself
