If you are in central iowa there is Mayhem comics with locations in both Ames and Des Moines. I just went to the des moines store for the first time a week or two ago, had a fairly decent selection of games. I guess I'm not sure how "friendly" they are though, didn't really spend time trying to talk to the folks there.
If you are outside of this area feel free to wait for someone with more extensive knowledge then me.

I'm in that area (up by ames) and I only have had interactions with that store but the owner there is into comics and hates RPGs. I have had numerous terrible interactions with them in ames. I'm debating driving down to the Des Moines store but we'll see.

Ah this takes me back. I have fond memories of the Ames location in the late 90s, but it sounds like I was more of their target audience. I was there for comics, wargaming and Clay-o-rama tournaments while RPGs weren't really on my radar. It doesn't surprise me to hear that RPGs just aren't a thing there still. I did have my first TTRPG experience there though. Some of us decided to experiment with a B5 TTRPG once or twice.
I've got nothing on the Des Moines location.

I've heard that about the ames location. I will say I was just in and out at the des moines store as we had some friends in town that just wanted to see if they had a comic book there before they left. I just had time to check out the rpg rack and buy the savage worlds action and adventure decks.

Unfortunately, I don't know anything about games over in Ames or Des Moines. Should you find yourself closer to Iowa City, we have Critical Hit, which has a dismal RPG selection but friendly proprietors, and The Hobby Corner, which has a better RPG selection and still friendly proprietors. I don't know about gaming at Critical Hit, since every time I've been in there the only players I find are Magic players, but Hobby Corner has nights devoted to different kinds of gaming (RPGs, wargaming, board games, etc).
Cedar Rapids has Tempest Games, which I haven't been to in about 6 months, but it had a pretty decent selection. People there seemed friendly enough. I'm guessing that the above probably will be of little help to you, but at least if you find yourself over here, you'll have some options. Best of luck!

Sorry, all I've got for you is Games +1, the Davenport gaming store. They rock pretty damn hard.

The Des Moines Mayhem store is light years ahead of where they used to be and is now average. I think I sent emails back in the early season of HJs where I bemoaned I couldn't get them to order me anything, even though I was willing to pre-pay the whole thing. There answer was always "well, we kind of just get what we get", which is obviously bullshit.
I spread it to a few people I knew went there that I just started ordering shit from Amazon and another more generalized game store because Mayhem wouldn't and BOOM. A few months later they started offering to order stuff for people. Now they even have signs saying they can order stuff, and FINALLY brought the 20% discount on core books to Des Moines that the Ames store had for years.
That said, I only go to the Des Moines store once every few months. Frankly, their customers annoy the everloving fuck out of me.
I've been to the Ames store a few times, found it had a better Cthulhu section. Never had any issues with them. I was on the motorcycle each time. The amount of leather and shit I usually wear when on the bike tends to discourage people from being rude
