I'm working on a con game set in the Harry Potter universe where all the players are playing Aurors. I was planning to start the game with everyone in an airport. One of the aurors is under cover playing a TSA agent watching out for unregistered/dark magic coming through the airport into the city. Then out of nowhere some dark magic shows up and a wandfight ensues. I was thinking of making these dark wizards be part of a dark wizard ring that is looking to terrorize the US. Aka... terrorists. Is this a a bad idea? Will people be offended? I'm thinking no, but something about it feels off.

Feels weird that dark wizards would stoop so low as to use muggle airlines.

I was thinking they were trying to fly under the radar(no pun) so to speak, taking alternate means of travel so as to shake off their pursuers.

Perhaps they have to move something or someone that makes magic go haywire and had no other choice but regular air travel? That might also make a wand fight interesting. As far as being offensive, I guess you could make them an organization intent on terrorizing muggles everywhere instead. They just happen to be in the US today, but have been known to work elsewhere. Kind of like COBRA .

Using wyrm's idea, perhaps it's some kind of anti magic nuke, being smuggled to the American school Kimi developed. Detonate that and wipe out the powers of some of the greatest wizards on this side of the pond?

Maybe the area has an anti-broom enchant field over it because of some compromise between muggles and magic casters in the past. Like maybe a truce between witch hunters and magic folk, "we'll stop hunting you if you give up your flying around here". Enchants work over long distances like that in the Potter world, they have the "no magic outside of school" enchant that lets them know when someone does, and then there's the one where if you say Voldemort, he can come and get you that works all over Great Britain. It would also be an excuse to always have Aurors or a magic office on foot in the area somewhere in case shiz goes down. "Police yourselves, or we'll police them" could have also been given in the truce.
What system are you going to do this in? I ask because I recently decided to do a Harry Potter game for my g/f, and I'm thinking of using Fate Accelerated.

I ask because I recently decided to do a Harry Potter game for my g/f, and I'm thinking of using Fate Accelerated. One of the PCs is going to be an ex-Quidditch Seeker so that would kill her main ability. Its going to be run in Fate Accelerated, my con game system of choice now. I want to make this serious and fairly brutal and show people that Harry Potter doesn't have to be a kids setting. There's a damn good chance someone can get Avada Kadavra'd or Crucio'd, and I can almost guarantee someone will be Imperio'd. I was thinking the airport might just be a good opening scene before moving on to the next case. I now think I will likely take a page from Kimi's husband's book and do something like the "Aurors" April Fool's Day trailer that Rainfall put out a couple years back. Put them smack dab in the middle of a city and open the game with the party fighting a Lieutenant of the Bad Guys(tm). Then we can go from there. The scenes I had in mind were: Party investigates whereabouts of the Bad Guys(tm) Party gets reprimanded for failure in opening scene(if the Lieutenant gets away) Party gets geared up for the big fight(a Q like being gives them cool shit they can use) <--- this is fodder and is first to get dropped for time, etc. Party takes on the Bad Guys(tm) Thoughts?

An airport can be a great backdrop but you kind of need a reason for everyone to be in such a mundane place. Maybe the airport is an American version of Kings Cross Station Platform 9 3/4. Everyone is there dropping their kids off to catch the Frogfart Rocket to Frogfart academy. The Aurers could be there as standard procedure when a lot of magic folk pass through the area, or they could be there because there was a tip off that something big might go down. Whatever you decide you want to come up with a good reason for everyone to be in such a place or situation.

Regarding the original question of "will people be offended", I don't think so SirGuido. So long as you don't make the Dark Wizard the stereotypical Islamic terrorists you should be OK. Plus there are some really good ideas about why dark wizards would be using muggle means in this thread.

I'm liking the idea of the airport being an American platform 9 3/4. I might think on that and see what else I can pair with that.

Ooh ooh ... WizAir Flight 665 departing shortly from gate 3.19 (fractions are just too olde world). But it could be a whole separate terminal ... So that you could have an entirely wizardy airport setting.

Sir Guido, make the bad guys English. No one is ever offended by English bad guys. They sort of expect to be the bad guys.

Of course, we just love being bad.
On a side note, I was thinking of running 'Kill Harry Potter'. Basically, the UK Government decides magic is too dangerous and starts a Shadow War against the Wizard community. PC's to be a crack team of bad-ass spec-ops wizard hunters.
Come to think of it, maybe that could be 'Kill the Wizards of Waverly Place' too. Just to be sure.
