Springpad, is a item curation app similar to Evernote. I have notebooks for recipes to try, gifts to purchase, workout planning, books to read, all kinds of things.
For a long time, I was okay with just using Google Drive to plan my campaign. Then I started getting frustrated I couldn't have things in multiple folders using tags like I can in Gmail. It sucked. I wanted to keep files in the religion folder and also have it in the folder for a particular session with my notes. Then I decided to give Springpad a try to solve these problems.
The first notebook I have is for inspiration and brainstorming (see it here, you don't need an account). I use this notebook mostly in block view which makes the notebook look like a cork board. You can also view it as a list or a list with little images (called detail view). I keep those views sorted by tag. That way, if I want to work on the plot tree involving Herculean Labor Monsters, I can go down to that tag and see all those Springs I have for reference.
After items are out of the brainstorming stage, I save them in the appropriate file or folder in Google Drive.
The second notebook I have is for my next session. This will have links to files in Google Drive, images or articles from across the web for reference, YouTube links for music, everything. This way, I don’t need a million tabs open on my browser. It’s all right at my fingertips. In theory, I could run the game with a couple books and my phone (since I also have a dice roller there).
Springpad is available on most platforms, which makes it great for catching something spur of the moment. If I’m in bed and wake up with a great idea, I can create a note on my phone and add details like tags, an image, or more details in the morning once I’m at a computer. If you’re out having dinner and see something inspirational just snap an image, share it to Springpad, and add to your inspiration notebook. If you forget about it, you will be reminded when you see it in the notebook later.
Each spring can work as a brainstorming item with the use of comments. If you click the spring “Great Consort/Ancient Mother” you can see how I've been working through this idea at the bottom. I also have links inside the spring to the deity’s image and a document I am working on in Drive for the religious mythos. That way I can make changes by clicking the arrow to the right and opening the document in a new window.
I'm sure there are lots of other ways this app could be leveraged for planning your campaign. I only started using it a few months ago but it has been a big help. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out.
