While your KITD guest remembers the moral panic of the late 80's and early 90's, I remember that silliness being alive and well during the early to mid 80's. I had friend's parents who angrily accused me of trying to send their children to hell. Of course going to a catholic school didn't help. The priests really didn't like D&D and would argue against playing it, since Catholic school felt they should control your life outside of school as well.
Plus the kids joined in on the fun...
As stupid as this sounds, I remember watching the video to Blind Melon's "No Rain", where this little bumblebee tap dancing girl goes around trying to make people understand who she is and then she finds this garden filled with bumblebee people and just dances happily with them. Not my type of music but when I saw that video I remember thinking "That's what finding gaming felt like back in the early 80's."
Of course, when kids in your own school are telling you that you are no good and going to hell (looking back it was obviously just another thing for them to use to be bullies - just more ammo) for the one thing that really gave me a sense of belonging...
Moral Panics suck.
