"Tyranny of Dragons sees the Cult of the Dragon seek to free Tiamat, the queen of evil dragons, from the Nine Hells and bring her into the Forgotten Realms. Adventurers will be tasked with putting a stop to the cult and ultimately face off against Tiamat herself. The story will be experienced through video games, mobile games, in-store play at local hobby shops, and other platforms as well." www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/132211-D-D-Multi-Platform-Experience-Tyranny-of-Dragons-Will-Launch-This-SummerWell there ya go. 5E confirmed for Yahtzee still not getting what makes tabletop work.

I'm pretty sure the brand makes more money than the game. This would reflect that.

Probably. But how good is the brand going to be if the foundation dissolves?

You're presuming that it will. And that's a pretty huge presumption.

Presumption should not be confused with fearful speculation.

What exactly about that article says that they are "still not getting what makes tabletop work"?
All that article says is that someone at WotC has a basic business degree and is smart enough to understand that they are a company whose job is to make money.

Just like they have been for the past decade when they decided it'd be a 'smart business move' to make tabletop DnD into a miniatures-based adaption of WoW. But hey, who am I to criticize? I don't have a basic business degree that transmutes shit to gold.

Nah, I'm done. I'm hoping it'll succeed. I'd love to see D&D thrive and provide me with new worlds. But the 4E attempts have left me somewhat doubtful, and the 'multimedia' tag doesn't reassure me. Regardless, I'll be waving a little flag for 'em, cause I grew up loving Dragonlance and the Realms. I'd like to see those franchises do very well for themselves, and D&D is the vehicle for them.

I just want this Degree that "transmutes shit into gold" - cause I got a fuck ton of shit that'd I'd gladly convert to gold given the opportunity . . . hell in the summer they spread it on the fields round here (muck spreading) so I'd be loaded Seriously though, the money making isn't the issue really . . . it's more that people who don't really understand the industry try to make money and tend to fail - which ultimately harms the hobby, because no profit, no support, hobby ultimately suffers. Case in point Piazo - run by people who understand the industry (at least better than WoTC) and they have great support for their product, a healthy profit margin and the hobby benefits as a result of their continued success . . . You can make a good game or a crap game and call it D&D and people will play it. You'll just never get people to agree on which is good and which is crap. As a product, they have to make a solid game that will still have the broadest appeal. Shooting for a big average means it will never be anybody's perfect game, but it'll be good enough for many.
As for multi-platform spamming, what the hell do you expect them to do? They have what amounts to the only brand with any name recognition outside existing customers. They have to get that name in front of as many people as possible and hope some of them bite on trying out paying products -- rpgs, board games, video games, whatever. Not everybody, but a lot of people start with D&D, play for a while, and then move partially or entirely to other games. They have to get to as many new people as they can to fight off the fact that they're in an ever-shrinking segment of ever-shrinking market.

The novels sell quite well. The games have, likewise.
So, really, what we have is someone at WotC following a path of already proven success.

...they're in an ever-shrinking segment of ever-shrinking market. Have to agree. At least they're trying to figure out how to adapt. They're like Blockbuster searching for Netflix. They don't want to get left in the dust as technology and the way people interact is changing. And they sure as hell don't want someone to beat them to the next best thing and get put them out of business. If you make some shit along the way, oh well. That is how all creative endeavors go. You're never going to be amazingly awesome 100% of the time (probably not even 50% of the time). Though I wasn't a fan of 4E, I continue to enjoy the worlds, games, and assorted D&D related stuff that is put into the market place. I think I've played most of the D&D related video games and read many novels. I want Wizards to do whatever it takes to keep giving me those things and don't care if they have to be whores to do that. I'm excited with the changes that I've seen so far for the next step in D&D and hope that this multimedia thing is cool. I would probably play it on console/PC, my phone, and an at home tabletop game if I had all those options.

"Whores to do it"? . . . W.O.T.C? Change one word and it still works - Whores of The Coast (which makes Hasbro their pimp) Aaron
