Just a couple of curious questions since I'm not so good at finding specific answers regarding them: -I heard somewhere that there are going to be variants of each race, such as Sun and Moon elves. Can anyone confirm or deny that? -I understand that the Realms are now the default setting. With that in mind, is there any announcement regarding a corresponding campaign book? I guess those are the only two questions, actually. So I'll substitute a third for a link to the cover artist's blog where you can see the art without text obscuring it. I really like the direction they took this time: tylerjacobson.blogspot.com/

Two subraces per race but no details. The Realms is being sort of rebooted as part of the Tyranny of Dragons cross platform D&DNext launch - so I'm not sure if it's THE default setting for the core rules. It's implied there will be new FR material following on from ToD. Have you checked the g+ discussion started by Hyvemynd on the art work? Aaron

I always gathered that the Realms is what they are focusing their lines, support and Modules on, but I do not think that the main 3 books will be exclusively Realms based. I think they already said that there are not Gods presented for the Clerics and Paladins, just the abstract "War" "Healing" "Law" etc etc. Which is good IMO, while I almost always use homebrew settings, I extremely dislike the realms and their casual use of magic and copious availability of potions.

While FR is sort of the "default" setting, there has been no confirmation of campaign setting books yet. The scheduled products through the rest of the year and early next year, don't include anything.
While I'm sure Ed is working on a setting product, next summer is likely to be the earliest we can expect to see it. We also know that the personalities behind Eberron and Dragonlance have been in communication with Wotc and expressed an interest in developing material, but so far Wotc hasn't committed to anything.
I think however the delivery channel for campaign materials this generation will be online, rather than on printed materials that likely don't have a great roi. This allows them to dribble out new content/information/maps, keeping people engaged long term, rather than in bursts when a new book is released.
I would however love to see some old school boxed campaign settings, even if they had to kickstarter them like many of the smaller companies do.

Ah, so the Realms aren't the default for the setting. That's probably for the best. And for a variety of reasons. And yes, the Realms approach to magic makes it seem like anything but a video game. All stats and flash. Which I guess has some benefits for a game setting, but really takes the 'Forgotten' part out of the equation. No sense of mystery or the unexplored.
I somehow doubt we'll ever see Dragonlance back in action. I love that series, but it's firmly rooted in the 80s style of fantasy which seems to be as out of vogue as van murals. But then, I didn't think Athas, the Dark Sun setting was coming back either, and 4E spat it out at me from nowhere. And it wasn't bad, either.

Realms will remain the setting for D&D Encounters. There a large online fan base for Dragon Lance - as a setting though it's story has been told and the original designers have been doing other things since then with other companies (including their own) Aaron

Yeah, I read several of their other series back in the early 90s. Darksword was pretty cheesetacular, but Death Gate Cycle still holds up well (I think so at least). I haven't read any of their other recent efforts like Dragonships of Vindras or the Sovereign Stone stuff. I'll always have a very soft sport for Dragonlance though.

I think we will see most of the settings, just not in the traditional manner. Mearls has stated, by name, that the major settings would be supported, and Kender for instance have appeared in the play test packets. I don't see them releasing the settings via physical products. I see a steady release of digital products via a subscription and the occasional stand alone product. Fiona the Deathgate Cycle remains one of, I think, the best fantasy series ever. A lot of their post Dragonlance work has been rather uninteresting, and sometimes just plain sloppy.

I just hope any GreyHawk stuff they release is 'rolled back" - ie: the year is 579CY it's your world now do what thou wilt. The numerous reboots WoTC and TSR did to it were always too inconsistent . . . They tried to make it like the Realms and that was silly as it's difference from the Realms (average magic, gritty with neutral, rather than good, being the default social politic) was it's main attraction. The biggest mistake was trying to make Mordenkainen an Elminster analogue. Aaron
