wizards.com/DnD/Article.aspx?x=dnd/basicrulesJust got home so I haven't read it yet. I hear lots of references and play examples from various settings, but apparently no art, and no monsters until August. So you'll likely need either one of the playtest packets, or one of the printed adventures in order to build encounters. Or you know, make it up I suppose.

I love how it feels like a modernized d20 overhaul. My only issue is with how bare bones it feels in way of options - but that's the point of the document. It's a taste to sell the meal.
If they can keep the rules that clean while adding more classes and backgrounds, etc. I will be amazed and sold completely.

I got it, going to let it soak in all weekend. The PDF is going to expand as the main rule sets are released, so I'll be keeping that in mind as I read through it. I'd love to get a game of this going with some pals, but I think the Summer is way more busy for everyone around here instead of lighter.
EDIT:
Apparently the first day, the PDF did not have a printer friendly version to it, so if you have a slower Tablet or computer, I'd suggest people look into that version

I'm impressed so far. It feels 2E nostalgic in a way I can't put to words yet, but they system seems very modernized. I'm in agreement - if the backgrounds and classes hold their level of quality when they're expanded out in the actual books I'm going to be a fan I think.

Yea, with 3E a lot of the "splat" books dealt with prestige classes, and I have never cared for prestige classes, and have never once GM'd a game containing any. With the creation options for 5E, I could easily see someone making them matter more and have more affects. This would feel very strongly like kits from the 2E Revised era. The "Complete Book of" series is often maligned, but I found them extremely fun to read, and my players had fun when I opened all of them up to play(no one had base class, so no one felt super weak). The best part was that kits really only altered a few things, maybe had a small description or alternate rule added to a character sheet.
I can see this being havoc with the 4E crowd that wanted absolute equality, but I never really cared about that anyway.

I like what I've read so far - a friend of mine rushed out and bought the starter box : waste of £17 when FREE basic core rules cover the game in much more detail. The starter box really is for 'the RPG curious neophyte without a mentor'. Aaron

You know, I downloaded the free PDF and tried to read it, but I just can't be bothered. I find that I don't care about D&D anymore. It's sad; like a lot of people, I started with D&D and played games in every iteration of the game. D&D feels too old, too clunky, too restrictive. I'm sure enough people will buy the books to keep the brand going, but I won't be one of them.

I'll show up for it. I never lost my love for classic medieval fantasy.

Character generation - a lot to like. They need to edit the wizard class a bit better, the paragraph on spell memorisation/slots/casting is very clumsy Bonds, flaws, traits = yes Aaron

We may not have bennies but we do have 'inspiration' which, when awarded, can be given up the player and passed to another player if that player believes the receiving player has done something significant in contributing to the story. +1 Aaron

Been reading it over the weekend, and i agree there is some things that feel sort of like 2E but others feel very much like Pathfinder happened, with a hint of 4e but none of the things that i minded. I had been playing the old Ice Wind Dale PC game a month ago and i was struck how much the spells resembled them.
Random taught, thee are 6 different saves now.
There seems to be no encumbrance rules, i wounder if thats the simple PDF version or it will not be a core rule i dont mind either way.
Spells: I really like the system they put in place for spell use, i also really love the idea of how the concentration system is set up to work its a lovely soft cap for over buffing.
Its housebreaker again: I just love how i could look at any class and just know i could change peaces of it without driving my self insane (Looks at 4e)

I'm pretty sure encumbrance rules will make an appearance. The target audience will make it so. Without it your fighter will have 3 spare sets of armor incase of rust monster and your rogue will have 2 dozen ten foot poles for ground tapping. Nature of the beast.
